I am so happy to let you know we have offered the band director/choir teacher job to Michael (Mike) Sulecki. He is a native of Dearborn, MI and has taught both 6-12 band and choir at Tahquamenon Area Schools in Newberry, MI.
The interview team represented the high school staff, the middle school staff, the administrative staff, parents, and former students. Three members of the team represented three eras of the PHS band program.
This was a difficult decision, but I am confident we have selected the right director to fit with our community, parents, students, and staff. This is a huge community position. Mr. Sulecki is energetic, positive, and talented.
I believe band camp was a success. The clinicians we hired to run camp were professional and helped to ensure a successful beginning to the 2017 marching band season. I am grateful to them.
This sort of change may cause anxiety for some, but it will be great. Mrs. Prater’s tenure at Portland Public Schools grew our program and I believe Mr. Sulecki will take it even farther.
Band rehearsal is still scheduled for Monday evening at 6:00. I welcome parents to attend this meeting right at 6:00 as I introduce Mr. Sulecki to the high school band. I am excited about having Mr. Sulecki at PPS and look forward to seeing you on Monday.
Mrs. Rockey
