Let us pray for Pope Leo!

A Message from Bishop James T. Ruggieri

On Sunday, October 11, Pope Leo XIV announced that he will undergo surgery in the coming days to remove a small nodule in his lung that was detected at a very early stage.

I ask the faithful of the Diocese of Portland and all people of goodwill to join me in praying for our Holy Father, that his surgery may be successful and that he may experience a full and speedy recovery.

I also ask that prayers for the Holy Father’s health be offered at Masses celebrated in the days leading up to his surgery and throughout his recovery.

Thank you for your prayers for Pope Leo XIV during this time.

Last month, Cheverus welcomed a student delegation from Colegio San Ignacio, Santiago in Santigao, Chile. This was the second part of the reciprocal exchange where Cheverus students and families hosted students from San Ignacio. In August, the Cheverus delegation traveled to Chile and did homestays. This exchange is something unique that Cheverus offers, since these students from Chile are part of the global Jesuit schools network - the largest, global educational network!

In its second year, this exchange offers students, families, and both school communities the opportunity to learn from one another and make authentic connections, through a shared mission.

The Cheverus host families and the school community were thrilled to welcome Jesuit-educated students to Maine. Students had the opportunity to explore Portland with Ms. Glass, visit Boston College and Boston with Ms. Wycoff, lead the school in prayer at Wednesday Assembly, catch lobsters in Casco Bay with Ms. Rhile’s marine biology class, and visit Ms. Murken, Ms. Deneen, and Ms. Cholod’s Spanish classes to teach students about Chilean culture, dance, and festivals and to engage in conversation! In addition, chaperone Mr. Alex Munoz, chair of the art department at San Ignacio brought a collaborative art lesson, with postcards created by students at San Ignacio. Ms. Metcalf’s studio art honors class will reply with their own artwork that will be displayed at the school in Chile. At the end of the exchange, the group of students and host families took time to reflect on their experience and share what made it so impactful. Thank you to the host students, their families, and everyone who helped to make their visit special.

It was a week of learning, exploring, and connection - and memories to last a lifetime!

Today we celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day.

From the National Park Service: “Native American peoples have inhabited the land we now call Maine for 12,000 years. Today four distinct tribes—the Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot—are known collectively as the Wabanaki, or “People of the Dawnland.” Click here to learn more about the indigenous people of Maine: https://www.nps.gov/acad/learn/historyculture/wabanaki.htm

We could not have asked for better weather on Saturday for the Cheverus Homecoming on Saturday, October 3! Before the game, Fr. Brian Conley, SJ blessed the new turf field and resurfaced track at Boulos Stadium.

Immediately after, captains of field hockey, boys and girls soccer, and the football team joined Kate Brunelle, president of Purple & Gold, and her husband Kevin; Brian Kilroy; Michael S. Komich and his wife Debbie; President of Cheverus Dr. John Moran; and Director of Athletics and Activities Amy Ashley on the field for the ribbon cutting.

Cheverus wants to thank Kate and Kevin Brunelle, Rex and Leighton Wheeler, The Kilroy Family, Nate and Amanda Brawn, Coca-Cola of Northern New England, Great Falls Construction, and Shaw Brothers Construction for their contributions to the success of this initiative.

The new press box is named for Micheal S. Komich, who served as Senior VP for Finance and Operations at Cheverus for nearly 36 years. The naming of the press box was made possible by the generosity of family, friends, and colleagues. Let us welcome back Michael Komich to Cheverus

The new state-of-the-art $3.2 million stadium field project, also features a resurfaced running track and updated field event spaces, and is the largest capital project that Cheverus has undertaken in more than 20 years.

While the game did not end the way we wanted, it was still a glorious day to celebrate Cheverus and the spectacular new field! GO STAGS!
