The Portland Public Schools looks forward to welcoming back our students next week! As a reminder, the first day for students in grades 1-12 will be Monday,Aug. 31. Pre-K and kindergarten students will start on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Teachers and ed techs and other staff have already returned, starting yesterday, Aug. 24.
Because Labor Day is late in 2026—it’s not until Monday, Sept. 7—students and staff are beginning school before that date. This is consistent with the timing of other districts in our area. However, there will be no school on Friday, Sept. 4, making for a long holiday weekend. ⚠️ Friendly Warning: Do Not Blame the Messenger! ⚠️
We love summer vacation as much as anyone, but our internal clocks are in for a shock!
With the start of school for 1st-5th graders on August 31st, May we recommend gradually adjusting evening routines.
Transitioning from late summer movie nights to bright-and-early alarms can be tough on little bodies.
A tiny adjustment each night means bright smiles, full energy tanks, and a stress-free launch to our best school year yet!

As we enter summer, we want you to know of an opportunity of PPS families to be involved in a new district-wide committee focused on improving the services and outcomes for students with IEPs. Its goals are to ensure that family voice is represented in key special education decisions and initiatives, and also to increase family awareness and engagement around PPS's programs and services. The deadline to apply is Sunday, June 21.

To form this committee, we are looking to bring together a diverse group of 15-20 parents with students across schools, grade spans, and programs. If you are interested, please submit your application! You can find it at this link: tinyurl.com/ppsSpecialEd26.

Thank you East End. Have a great summer!
