Since 2001, MILE I has touched the lives of hundreds of our Scholars and Alumni. This year, 70 Scholars spent this annual long weekend in the Katahdin Region, connecting with their peers, enjoying Maine’s great outdoors, and volunteering at Baxter State Park. Words that Scholars have used to describe this experience include “belonging,” “growth,” and “life-changing.”

We are grateful to the Scholars who joined us for MILE I in 2026 and to our supporters for continuing to help make this event possible. Thank you.💙🧡

Over the weekend, 70 Scholars ascended upon New England Outdoor Center - NEOC for the 25th annual MILE I!🏔️

We asked a handful of Scholars about their favorite part of the experience. From time spent bonding with peers to outdoor excursions to leadership activities, everyone had opportunities to grow and develop.

In a full-circle moment, the Mitchell Institute is proud to welcome Alum Osage Crie to the team as Scholar Program Coordinator! In this role, Osage will manage the selection process for the Mitchell Institute Fellowship Program and help oversee the two supplemental funds that support Scholars.

Osage was named a Mitchell Promise Scholar from Fryeburg Academy in 2019. He graduated from the University of New England in 2023 and most recently worked at the Boys and Girls Club as the Middle School Program Coordinator in the Portland and South Portland locations.

“I love having a job where I feel like I’m getting to make a difference in college kids’ lives and people’s lives, and this one in particular means a lot to me,” Osage said of his new position at the Mitchell Institute. “I’m just hoping that I can give out the same amount of support that was given to me.”

Last Friday night, more than 600 people gathered at Brick South at Thompson's Point in Portland for the 2026 Mitchell Institute Gala. Together, we raised $400,000 that will directly support programs that serve Scholars.

Thank you to the Scholars and Alumni whose voices carried the evening, including Tony DiSotto '99, Gwyneth Adrian '23, Jesse Blackburn '10, Fatumo Abdirahman '23, Jamila Mohamed '24, Ahmednoor Hassan '23, Baqer Jalil '23, and Charis Loveland '98.

Save the date! The Gala returns next year on October 22, 2027.

Nametags have been printed. Outfits are selected. And the countdown to the 2026 Mitchell Institute Gala has officially begun!✨

Tomorrow evening, more than 600 guests will fill Brick South at Thompson’s Point in Portland for an unforgettable event celebrating our Scholars and supporting our mission of increasing the likelihood that young people from every community in Maine will aspire to, pursue, and achieve a college education.

As always, we are grateful to our sponsors for making this night possible and to the community for upholding our steadfast belief that no Maine student with the ability and ambition to pursue a college education should be denied that opportunity because of limited financial resources.
