The Portland Public Schools looks forward to welcoming back our students next week! As a reminder, the first day for students in grades 1-12 will be Monday,Aug. 31. Pre-K and kindergarten students will start on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Teachers and ed techs and other staff have already returned, starting yesterday, Aug. 24.
Because Labor Day is late in 2026—it’s not until Monday, Sept. 7—students and staff are beginning school before that date. This is consistent with the timing of other districts in our area. However, there will be no school on Friday, Sept. 4, making for a long holiday weekend. The Portland Public Schools is among seven Maine school districts getting funds to help address student homelessness. MaineHousing announced Monday that it has distributed more than $2 million to the districts through the Student Homelessness Prevention Program. The idea is to help the nearly 1,300 students and their families across the districts experiencing — or at risk of experiencing — homelessness.
