To help the kids learn about Portland and what is in our town vs what they think is(ie, not the jump park or Disney) we grew our own little town! The kids planted grass seed and we watched them grow and develop roots. Then I took pictures of some of our favorite places and gave each child one to place in their planter. We talked about why we love them and what makes them important.
