Last night, Georgetown University professor Dagomar Degroot presented "The History and Future of the Moon" before a packed-house on our UNE Portland Campus. It was an amazing talk that chronicled the successes and foibles of the US Space Program, while also offering a glimpse of what the future may hold as we enter the Lunar Anthropocene.

The five public events will challenge attendees to consider such topics as the possibilities created by the recent Artemis moon mission; what Henry David Thoreau’s experiences at Walden Pond can teach us about how we perceive time; and the inner workings of the human brain where memories form.

For our latest “Oh, the Humanities” podcast episode, Josh sat down with David Bennell, who has created and led sustainability programs at Fortune 500 companies, global NGOs, and philanthropic foundations, and has recently brought his expertise to the UNE College of Business.

Their wide-ranging conversation covered such topics as the Cuyahoga River catching on fire during David’s youth in Ohio, the demise of a robust Atlantic Cod fishery in the Gulf of Maine, whether AI can help solve our climate crisis, and how UNE students and faculty are working across traditional disciplinary boundaries to create a healthier world. Throughout the talk, the importance of the humanities to the environmental and sustainability movements kept coming up, too.

Last night, we honored our 2026 CGH Scholars, who have completed two semesters of the CGH Seminar Course, and listened to a riveting lecture about America's affordable housing crisis by the Atlantic Magazine's Yoni Appelbaum. It was a great way to cap our 17th academic year at CGH!
