Gerald E. Talbot Community School

Gerald E. Talbot Community School Talbot Community School empowers all learners to achieve high standards in a safe and welcoming environment. Gerald E. Our school is named in honor of Gerald E.

Talbot Community School is a Pre-K through Grade 5 school located off outer Forest Avenue in Portland, Maine. Talbot. Mr. Talbot is one of Portland’s most cherished and respected community leaders. He is an educator, author, historian, military veteran, civil and human rights activist, founding President of the Portland branch of the NAACP, and is the first African American to be elected to Maine’

s Legislature and to chair the Maine State Board of Education. His accomplishments include the successful passage of the Maine Fair Housing Bill, the Maine Human Rights Act, and the establishment of the Maine Human Rights Commission. We are proud of our diverse population of learners from around the world, who speak a total of eleven different languages. Our school is in a community building which also houses a branch of the Portland Public Library, a Greater Portland Health dental office, and space for the Recreation Department of Portland Parks and Recreation, including a community swimming pool. Our grounds include tennis courts, a basketball court, an accessible playscape for children of all abilities, and multiple ball fields. Gardens planted by students dot the area and a community garden has been established.

School may be out for the summer, but the adventure of reading is just getting started!

We are excited to invite all Talbot students to participate in our Summer Reading Challenge. Reading over the summer helps students maintain the incredible growth they made throughout the school year while fostering creativity, imagination, and a lifelong love of learning.

✨ How to participate:
πŸ“– Read at least 3 books over the summer
πŸ“ Complete the accompanying reflection sheets
🎯 Take on as many reading challenge activities as you can

🍧 Students who complete the challenge will be invited to a special Fall Popsicle Party to celebrate their hard work and love of reading!

Families, be sure to check out our Parent Involvement Tips flyer for ideas on supporting reading and writing at home, including creating reading routines, visiting the library, discussing books together, and encouraging writing.

Together, we can help our students stay engaged, curious, and growing all summer long!
