From recent conversations with parents, they have realized in retrospect that they were not getting good piano instruction. Yes, the instructor was "fun," but perhaps fun and good instruction can be wrapped in the same lesson. If you or your child is currently taking lessons, ask yourself if these things are being covered: a progressive approach to note reading, emphasis on good timing, scales (there are 15), chords (there are 208), ear training, theory, improvisational skills, technique building. There needs to be a balance, but especially for children, there should be a plan for developing all these skills. Be sure you are getting a good return on your investment. Fun, nice, and informative can happen in the same studio.

Adults who receive formal music instruction as children have more robust brainstem responses to sound than peers who never participate in music lessons and that the magnitude of the response correlates with how recently training ceased. These results suggest that neural changes accompanying musical training during childhood are retained in adulthood (Skoe, E. & Kraus, N. 2012. A Little Goes a Long Way: How the Adult Brain Is Shaped by Musical Training in Childhood, Journal of Neuroscience, 32, 34, 11510. DOI: 10.1523/JNEUROSCI.1949-12.2012). - NAMM Foundation
