While January 1st marks a new year, we remain committed to learning, acknowledging, and reflecting on our great nation's history (even in its not-so-great moments).
Did you know that on January 1st, 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, about which he stated: "I never in my life, felt more certain that I was doing right than I do in signing this paper. . . . If my name ever goes into history it will be for this act, and my whole soul is in it.” Indeed!

A few years back, TIME magazine wrote an article about the dread that January 1st brought to slaves and their families each year. January 1st marked 'Hiring Day' - a day that tore black families apart as some slaveholders would sell or trade individual slaves.
May the positive aspects of social media allow us to spread and shed light on the many ways we can continue to learn about and learn from our country's history. May this also lead to a more just and equitable society, today, this year, and for decades and generations to come.
Sail Consulting wishes everyone a happy new year!
New Year's Day used to be widely known as "Hiring Day" or "Heartbreak Day"
