Being an educator is a noble profession. Banning books, restricting academic freedom, and a call for public review of lesson plans is an attack on the profession. A strong democracy and public education system is one that values our educators and sees them as professionals.

While January 1st marks a new year, we remain committed to learning, acknowledging, and reflecting on our great nation's history (even in its not-so-great moments).

Did you know that on January 1st, 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, about which he stated: "I never in my life, felt more certain that I was doing right than I do in signing this paper. . . . If my name ever goes into history it will be for this act, and my whole soul is in it.” Indeed!

---------------------
A few years back, TIME magazine wrote an article about the dread that January 1st brought to slaves and their families each year. January 1st marked 'Hiring Day' - a day that tore black families apart as some slaveholders would sell or trade individual slaves.

May the positive aspects of social media allow us to spread and shed light on the many ways we can continue to learn about and learn from our country's history. May this also lead to a more just and equitable society, today, this year, and for decades and generations to come.

Sail Consulting wishes everyone a happy new year!

New Year's Day used to be widely known as "Hiring Day" or "Heartbreak Day"

Had the honor of joining a classroom today for a beautiful conversation about The Ugly Vegetable by author Grace Lin. Teachers so often use PIE to consider the author's purpose. In reality, it's usually not that simple. Grace Lin's TedTalk below deepens the discourse around the author's purpose in writing this book and others. Lin demonstrates the importance of lining our libraries with books that reflect our readers.

What your child reads sets the path for their own self-worth as well as how they see others. Grace Lin is a children's book author/illustrator whose book, “...

As we head into a day of poetry workshop facilitation with elementary teachers, this BRILLIANT article serves as a smart reminder of our work. Poetry Is open to the interpretation of the individual reader. The sooner we allow young children the ownership of their own analysis, the more enjoyable it will become. It's art. There is no right or wrong answer.

Also: 'How in the name of all that’s moldy did this poem wind up on a proficiency test?'
