Did you know this household item can be used in your garden as a natural insecticide? Shrimp tails contain chitin, which increases the levels of chitinase in the soil. This is an enzyme that dissolves the shells and teeth of harmful pests in your garden, while also serving as a growth hormone for your plants! Instead of relying on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, you can use this natural and sustainable garden tip to make your plants more resistant to both below and above ground pests. Plus, it's a great way to repurpose something that might otherwise be thrown away!

Companion planting is a gardening technique where different plants are grown near each other to provide benefits such as pest control, pollination, and improved growth. By strategically placing compatible plant species together, gardeners can create mutually beneficial relationships that help enhance the health and productivity of the plants! Two plants that are extremely beneficial to one another when planted together are tomatoes and basil. By growing these cooking essentials together, you can increase productivity, encourage biodiversity, and minimize chemical use in your garden.

Trench composting is a super simple and cost-effective composting method that will improve your soil health year after year AND get rid of your kitchen scraps--all you need is time, space, and a shovel! Dig a trench in the area you want to plant your garden the following year, then use it to dispose of your kitchen waste, yard clippings, and other compostable materials. Cover them with soil in the fall and allow nature to go to work over the winter! The buried organic matter will decompose over time, enriching the soil with valuable nutrients. This will help improve your soil structure, increase soil fertility, and reduce the amount of waste your home sends to the landfill. It will also help your soil retain moisture and encourage healthy populations of all those lovely, beneficial microflora and microfauna!

While there are hundreds of different ways to add carbon to your soil, improving your soil health doesn’t have to be complicated! One of the easiest and quickest ways to fix poor quality soil is to simply mix it with a rich, quality soil. If you are gardening in raised beds, this is super simple to do AND will save you tons of money! Just combine 80% of your cheap, low quality soil with 20% of a high carbon content soil and your plants will thank you for it!

When it comes to growing produce inside a greenhouse, there are plenty of challenges concerning the bugs that CAN get inside and those that CAN’T. We found this out first hand as we battled harmful bugs which made their way into our greenhouse seeking refuge from the subfreezing temperatures outside. Since tomatoes require the help of pollinators to fertilize the plants and produce fruit, we had to take on this additional role typically carried out by bees during summer days in an outdoor garden. Despite the challenges we faced throughout the course of our first winter at the Datacenter Greenhouse, we have learned so much and are so proud of the work our team has put into making this project a success!

We’ve learned a lot throughout the course of our first winter at the Datacenter Greenhouse. There have been many challenges we’ve faced that are unique to the task of growing produce in below freezing temperatures, including sub par lighting conditions and heating requirements. As many of you are well aware, we recently had a massive cold front sweep across the nation! Here in Usk, WA, we’ve hit record lows in the -20s, almost to -30! So what does that mean for the Datacenter Greenhouse?
Our greenhouse team has been working around the clock to troubleshoot these unexpected temperatures, making some last minute changes to SUCCESSFULLY keep our plants going! Over the past couple days, we’ve been able to keep the greenhouse at or above 50 degrees. We are so proud of our greenhouse team and the around the clock work they’ve been putting in to make this project a success and we can’t wait to improve from here!
