Why do I bring a pelvis to barre class?

It usually gets a laugh 🤭, but this little model helps explain pelvic alignment, hip placement, pelvic floor function, posture, balance, and the connection between our feet 👣 and our core.

One of the goals of Bare Barre™ is to help people understand why they’re moving, not just follow along with the exercises.

Sometimes the best teaching tool in the room isn’t the barre—it’s the pelvis sitting next to it. 😊

Anyone else have a trunk devoted to props? I teach mostly propless classes, but I still cart around squishy balls and baby weights and stretching straps and mini loop bands and sticks that can be used in place of barres.

I keep seeing “our signature class” on websites for classes that sound a lot like classes found at many other places: cardio barre, HIIT barre, hot mat barre. If I had to choose one of my classes that’s “signature,” it would be YoLarates™️ at The BOG The class I created in 2009 that is seasoned the most with my personality. However, there are (sadly) few places where you can find Lotte Berk’s original work, so is Legacy Barre also signature? How about my newest class (and teacher training), Bare Barre™️- would that be considered “signature”?
Anyway, these three classes are likely a little different than what you might find at other barre studios (whether in-person or virtual). Give them a try!

I have said that “the world does not need another barre certification.”

What I really mean is: the world does not need another bad barre certification.

As President of the Barre Fitness Alliance, I’ve spent years immersed in barre education. I’ve worked with training providers, evaluated educational standards, and advocated for preserving the integrity of barre instruction.

The problem isn’t too many trainings; it’s that there are too many poorly designed trainings where underprepared instructors “certify” others, who then go on to teach classes that are barely recognizable as barre. We see it all the time: overpriced studio certifications marketed to loyal clients who may not realize they’re receiving a very limited education.

So why is Bare Barre™ Teacher Training different?

Because it isn’t trying to replace foundational barre education.

It starts with instructors who are already trained.

There are many excellent barre certifications that teach the fundamentals (the Barre Fitness Alliance can guide you). Bare Barre™ builds on that foundation and goes deeper.

This training explores:
• Traditional barre principles
• Foot health and barefoot movement
• Fascia-focused concepts
• Anatomical understanding
• The history and evolution of barre

And while the training is online and self-paced, don’t mistake accessibility for lack of quality.

The course was created by a Master Barre Instructor—a title that was earned, not self-appointed. It reflects nearly two decades of teaching experience, extensive continuing education, and mentorship from respected leaders across barre, group fitness, personal training, assisted stretching, and barefoot exercise.

Bare Barre™ Teacher Training is accessible, and you won’t need to take out a second mortgage to continue your education.

Bonus: ACE professionals and Yoga Alliance members can earn continuing education credits.

Because barre deserves better than watered-down trends.

And instructors deserve better than expensive certifications that leave them with more questions than answers.

A 30-second bit from the 30-minute guide that goes with the Bare Barre™️ Feet First Kit. I’m excited to share the tools and exercises that I use to keep my feet (and in the turn the rest of my body) healthy and pain-free. Stay tuned.

One year ago today, I asked AI to describe me.

At the time, it saw me as a barre instructor, nutritionist, and fitness professional.

This year, the description was different.

It described me as a movement educator, advocate, and steward of barre—someone focused not just on teaching exercises, but on preserving the roots of barre, raising standards in the industry, and helping people move well for life.

What struck me most wasn’t the mention of certifications, businesses, or programs. It was the recognition that my work has become more about education.

I’m passionate about strength, longevity, function, and accessibility. I care about helping people understand why movement matters, not just what to do.

Whether through Barre On the Go, the Barre Fitness Alliance, Bare Barre™, or the classes I teach every week, my mission remains the same: helping people build a stronger foundation for life through movement.

It’s interesting to see how an outside perspective changes over time. Looking back, I think this version feels a little more like me. And I can see just how much I have evolved.

What would AI say has changed about you over the last year?
