Be intentional with unscheduled/directed time. At The Wave, we built in Challenge Time. Kids are often given supplies and told to “figure it out” and build whatever they would like. At first, this was quite the challenge, but as they experience it time and time again, it becomes much more fun than challenging!

“I’M BORRREEDDD.”

We’ve all heard it, especially during the summer when we’ve run out of ideas and the energy to entertain our kids at all hours of the day.

But, what if we schedule unscheduled time? Give your kids challenges or activities that spark their imagination. Things like…

Build a LEGO tower as tall as you are.
Go outside and collect items to create nature art.
Make a fort out of blankets or boxes.
Create a piece of art based on something that inspires you.

Boredom is a critical tool in teaching kids independence and creativity, and can even help them discover their passions. So, this is your friendly reminder to let yourself off the hook—boredom isn't bad and it doesn't make you a bad parent.
