Sea Island Sprouts

Sea Island Sprouts Sea Island Sprouts is a Reggio-inspired neighborhood preschool serving children ages 1–5.

We offer a nurturing, play-based environment where children explore, grow, and thrive through hands-on, child-led learning experiences.

POV: You’re a toddler driving through a preschool thunderstorm. ⛈️🚗

This is exactly why we love play-based learning. What looks like splashing is really storytelling, cause and effect, sensory exploration, cooperation, and joyful problem-solving, all happening naturally through play.

Not every preschool day includes a juvenile alligator… but this one did. 🐊

We were so grateful to welcome the Interpretive Ranger from Hunting Island State Park and their animal ambassador, a juvenile alligator, to Sea Island Sprouts. The children had the chance to observe, wonder, ask questions, and connect with one of the amazing animals that lives right here in the Lowcountry.

And because nature always has its own plans, a turtle showed up on campus that same morning — just in time to add to the day’s discoveries. 🐢

As a Reggio-inspired preschool, we believe meaningful learning begins with real experiences. Our children don’t learn about the natural world from worksheets. They encounter it, observe it, talk about it, revisit it, and build understanding through curiosity.

From our campus to the Cypress Wetlands, from visiting rangers to unexpected wildlife guests, these are the kinds of experiences that help children see themselves as part of a larger living community.

A little prehistoric wonder.

A lot of Lowcountry learning.

And one unforgettable preschool day.

Today, for World Ocean Day, our classroom had no walls.

One of the gifts of being located in the walkable downtown community of the Port Royal SC is that we are just a stone’s throw from The Sands Beach. We can put on our shoes, gather together, and walk from school to the water.

On our walk today, the children noticed so much: the trees, the marsh, the river, the salty air, the cool breeze, the sand beneath their feet, and the water stretching out in front of them. At the beach, they discovered crabs, shark teeth, shells, and all the little treasures that invite children to slow down, wonder, and ask questions.

They also noticed something else: litter in the marsh.

So we talked about it. Where does trash go? What happens when it ends up in the water? How do our choices affect the animals, the marsh, the river, and the ocean?

As a Reggio-inspired school, we believe the classroom is the third teacher. Often, our classroom is the environment around us. Today, that classroom was the marsh, the beach, the river, and the path between school and The Sands.

At Sea Island Sprouts, caring for the earth is not something we talk about one day a year. It is something we practice and live. We reduce single-use plastics, divert over 90% of our food waste from landfills, and help children understand that they are part of a larger community that includes the land, water, plants, animals, and people around them.

We are teaching children to be good stewards of the world they are inheriting, because the future is theirs. 🌊

Our kids had the BEST time visiting the Town of Port Royal Police Department! Since it was National Donut Day, we brought local donuts from Maynard's Ice Cream & Cafe for the officers — because showing up to the police department without donuts felt legally questionable.

We also brought treats for K9 Rocky from Bracken & Bone on Paris Avenue, because Rocky deserves local goodies too. 🐾

The children got to meet officers, visit with Rocky, explore police cars, use the radio, hear the sirens, and even check out the back seat. We are happy to report this was the only acceptable reason for our children to be in the back of a police car, and everyone was released on good behavior. Mostly. 😉

Afterward, we walked to Live Oaks Park for a picnic lunch, cut through the wetlands, and even spotted an alligator having lunch too. Very Port Royal SC. Very memorable.

We’re so grateful for our relationship with the Port Royal Police Department, from story time with PFC Couch Potato to Touch-A-Truck, station visits, and even the custom police graphics on our Cozy Coupe from SK Signs, Designs & Marketing. Community connections like this are such a special part of childhood at Sea Island Sprouts.

Thank you to the Port Royal Police Department, Maynard’s Donuts, Bracken & Bone, and our amazing teachers for making today such a fun adventure for our kiddos! 🍩🚓🐾🐊
