Roots Learning Center At Roots Learning Center, we believe there’s more to education than memorizing facts and passing tests.

Our nature-based, holistic learning community in Port Orchard, WA, is built around creativity, critical thinking, and connection, which we believe to be the essential roots of a meaningful education.

How we start the day matters. 🌿

At Roots, we begin our mornings together.

Our morning group might include SEL, shout-outs and celebrations, breathwork, mindfulness, games, laughter, problem-solving, and conversations about what it means to be part of a community. 💛

These moments aren’t separate from learning. They help students practice communicating, regulating emotions, encouraging others, navigating challenges, and feeling comfortable being themselves within the group.

When kids feel safe, seen, connected, and ready, they’re better prepared for everything that comes next.

It’s one of our favorite ways to start the day at Roots. 🌱

🧘‍♀️🌿 Come out for yoga at Roots!

We love seeing our space used in ways that bring people together. 💛 We’re excited to welcome a local yoga instructor into the Roots Learning Center space for Monday yoga classes!

There’s something pretty special about watching Roots become more than a place for learning during the school day. It is becoming a space for connection, movement, wellness, and community.

Week 2 at Roots was filled with hands-on learning, creativity, and connection!

Students took their learning outdoors through nature journaling, explored STEM concepts through collaboration, and strengthened their problem-solving skills together.

In the kitchen, they made tacos and learned important kitchen safety skills, including how to safely cut apples. They also created artwork to decorate our school and make the space feel even more like their own.

Every activity was another opportunity to build confidence, practice real-life skills, and experience the joy of learning together.

Full Learning. Real Childhood. 🌱

A new space for movement, creativity, and hands-on learning! 🌿

We’re excited to reveal our garage space, where Roots students will have even more room for PE, STEAM projects, workshops, building, creating, and other activities throughout the year.

We’re also thrilled to welcome Jessica Ritter and her Sister Circes to Roots for yoga on Mondays every other week! We’ll be sharing the upcoming class schedule soon. 🧘‍♀️

So many possibilities, all under one roof!

Our first week at Roots 🌿💛

After months of planning, building, organizing, creating, and dreaming, this week our spaces finally came to life with the people they were made for: our kids.

We explored the woods, settled into new routines, learned together, played together, created, connected, and started building our little Roots community.

There were muddy shoes, curious questions, new friendships, lots of movement, and plenty of moments that reminded us exactly why we created Roots.

One week down, and so much ahead of us. 🌱

Here’s to a year of learning deeply, growing confidently, and giving kids the space to be kids.

After lots of sorting, organizing, labeling, and figuring out where everything should live, our supply room is officially ready for the start of school! 🌿📚

Not everything will be out at once, but there are binders, books, hands-on learning activities, manipulatives, games, and so many resources ready to be pulled out as our learners need them.

We’ve been working all summer to turn an empty space into a school, and seeing shelves filled with materials ready for our kids makes it feel very real.

Now we’re ready to put it all to use. 💜

First day of school, here we come! 🌱

🌿 The steps are DONE! 🌿

One more piece of our outdoor classroom is officially ready. 💜

What started as a wooded hillside now has a safe, sturdy path leading students down into one of our favorite learning spaces.

At Roots, the outdoors isn’t just somewhere we go for recess. It’s part of the classroom. A place to explore, investigate, create, get muddy, ask questions, and experience learning in a way that feels real.

There’s been a lot of work happening behind the scenes to get every corner of Roots ready for our students, and seeing projects like this finally come together makes us even more excited for what’s ahead.

A little behind the scenes at Roots 🌿

There is a lot happening as we sort, organize, and prepare all of the manipulatives and learning materials for our students.

To us, these aren’t just supplies filling shelves. They’re opportunities to build, create, problem-solve, experiment, and make learning something children can actually touch and experience.

We’re getting closer and closer to welcoming our learners, and it’s pretty exciting watching everything come together. 💜

At Roots, our learning spaces are designed to be flexible because kids learn in different ways.

A table for working together.
A cozy spot for reading.
Open space to build, create, and explore.
And when learning is better outside? We head outside.

Our indoor and outdoor spaces give students room to move, collaborate, focus, explore, and learn in ways that make sense for what they’re doing.

Because sometimes the best learning space has four walls.

And sometimes it has trees. 🌲
