Wear Red on Monday, January 11!

Subject: Wear Red on Monday, January 11

Hello SKEA Members,

On Monday, January 11, the US Supreme Court will hear a case called Friedrichs vs CTA that seeks to prohibit associations from collecting representation fees (called agency fees or "fair share" fees) from non members who benefit from our collective bargaining agreement. This court case has been funded by wealthy corporate interests that are going all-out in an attempt to weaken unions and take away collective bargaining rights. While the US Supreme Court has upheld union rights many times before, it is undertain how the current court will rule. We won't know the outcome of the case until June.

As union members, it is our collective strength that allows us to accomplish things---like smaller class sizes and higher pay-- that we would not be accomplishing if we had to do it as individuals.

As a show of solidarity, please consider wearing red on Monday. Consider taking a picture of you (and your colleagues) during your duty free time and then posting it on social media using # ProudToBeUnion. Please use personal devices (not school owned equipment) for any pictures/postings.

Visit the WEA Membership Matters website to learn more about what's at stake and find links to the Friedrichs vs CTA case and the anti-worker political groups funding the case.

High Schoolers Stage "Read-In" Protest in Solidarity with Teachers' Strike

Check out these great kids in solidarity with Seattle teachers.

(Once again, content warning in general for the Stranger. This article is okay, but there is NSFW content elsewhere on their site.) School's out until teachers can negotiate a fair deal with the school district, but, instead of getting high and playing video games (as I would have done), a group of students from more than 10 Seattle-area high schools gathered together in UW's Red Square to read. Eli Konsker said he organized the…

Guest Editorial: We Are Seattle Parents, and We Support Seattle Teachers in the Event of a Strike

A letter from Seattle parents in support of teachers.

(Note that The Stranger does have some NSFW content on its site. While this article is fine, exercise caution if you click elsewhere!) As parents of children in Seattle Public Schools, we're not excited about the idea of a strike that would delay the start of the school year. But if a strike does happen, we will stand firmly with the teachers who are fighting to provide a high quality education for all our kids. The Seattle Educati… 09/08/2015

Seattle Teachers Unanimously Vote to Strike After Failed Negotiations with School District

"It's the first time Seattle Education Association (SEA) members—representing 5,000 teachers, nurses, psychologists, physical therapists, and administrative workers—have voted to strike in 30 years, according to Phyllis Campano, vice president of the union and chair of the SEA bargaining team." Just after 7:30 p.m. this evening, a packed Benaroya Hall full of Seattle's teachers unanimously shouted, "AYE!!!" on a motion to strike. There were no dissenting "nays." The Seattle teachers union will strike on the first day of school, September 9, if no tentative agreement is reached with the Sea… 09/04/2015
