Wear Red on Monday, January 11!
Subject: Wear Red on Monday, January 11
Hello SKEA Members,
On Monday, January 11, the US Supreme Court will hear a case called Friedrichs vs CTA that seeks to prohibit associations from collecting representation fees (called agency fees or "fair share" fees) from non members who benefit from our collective bargaining agreement. This court case has been funded by wealthy corporate interests that are going all-out in an attempt to weaken unions and take away collective bargaining rights. While the US Supreme Court has upheld union rights many times before, it is undertain how the current court will rule. We won't know the outcome of the case until June.
As union members, it is our collective strength that allows us to accomplish things---like smaller class sizes and higher pay-- that we would not be accomplishing if we had to do it as individuals.
As a show of solidarity, please consider wearing red on Monday. Consider taking a picture of you (and your colleagues) during your duty free time and then posting it on social media using # ProudToBeUnion. Please use personal devices (not school owned equipment) for any pictures/postings.
Visit the WEA Membership Matters website to learn more about what's at stake and find links to the Friedrichs vs CTA case and the anti-worker political groups funding the case.
I'm about to leave for the holiday weekend, and I want to say how thankful I am for SKSD employees and how hard they work for our kids.
Have a great Thanksgiving!

Power back at SKEA and the kettle is on! Hope all are warm and dry. :)
SKEA is currently without power and PSE is estimating it will be back around 6pm. Our phones are therefore offline, but you can reach John on his cell or via email at [email protected]. Stay warm!

Tonight's Rep Council meeting is still on!
Some parts of Port Orchard are without power, but SKEA's lights are on! :)
