LONE FINALIST: The Port Neches-Groves ISD Board of Trustees named Deputy Superintendent Julie Gauthier the lone finalist for the position of Superintendent during tonight’s called meeting at the administration building.

The action came after the board went into closed session to deliberate matters concerning the employment, duties, retirement, transition, and appointment of Superintendent Dr. Mike Gonzales, including his transition to Superintendent Emeritus, which was approved of and passed unanimously.

Family and friends of Mrs. Gauthier, who stands to become the first Superintendent in PNGISD history to be a product of PNGISD, were present for the moment and congratulated her following the action by the board.

No further action will take place until the regular September board meeting.

ACCOUNTABILITY: The Texas Education Agency (TEA) today announced the release of 2026 A-F Accountability Ratings for public school systems and campuses across the state.

1,202 districts and 9,105 campuses were rated in 2026. 24% of both districts and campuses increased in rating compared to 2025. 585 campuses across Texas improved from below an A to an A rating in 2026.

In total, 85% of campuses that received an A-F rating statewide achieved acceptable academic performance (C or above).

For the second-straight year, PNGISD received a B rating, or Above Standard Achievement.

These results reflect the hard work and commitment of our students and staff across PNGISD. We are proud of their continued dedication to learning, growth and excellence.

It couldn't be done, also, without great family support at home.

As we get to work on this year, we reflect back and say — job well done. 💜

SCHOOL STARTS THURSDAY!! Shout out to our Crossing Guards who show up rain or shine to get your kiddos to the school grounds safely!! They will be at the crossings starting Thursday, so please drive safely, stay alert and watch for their direction. Thank you for helping keep our kids safe!!

SCHOOL STARTS THURSDAY, and that means reduced speeds in all school zones will be in effect!! Also, note that signs showing school zone times have been added to the school zone signs on Merriman by the Middle School. This means the school zone is active during those times even if the lights are not flashing, so please be aware. Thank you for helping us keep our kids safe!

TRAINING DAYS: The district held its first Operations Academy today at the high school, inviting its unsung heroes for a day to learn and grow together.

Personnel from our Maintenance, Transportation, Food Service, Custodial Staff, Substitutes and more were invited for this day to help strengthen the roles they play in our school family.

There are no small roles: everyone plays a part, and these crews do so much so that our kids can learn — and our teachers can teach — in a safe, friendly and inviting environment.

Together, we're all working to BE THE LIGHT that helps create a brighter tomorrow. 💜🤍💡

BE THE LIGHT: Faculty, administrators and staff from throughout the district gathered at the high school for our annual Convocation.

After a hearty breakfast, the crowd was entertained by outgoing Groves and Port Neches elementary choir students before new hires from across the district were introduced.

Hearing from board vice-president Dr. Scott Bartlett, Superintendent Dr. Mike Gonzales — and keynote speaker, veteran educator and author Allyson Apsey, the crowd came away with one underlying message for the year: we can be the spark that helps to make a brighter tomorrow, as long as we strive to BE THE LIGHT that makes it happen.

Special thanks to our high school cafeteria workers for a great breakfast. It hit the spot!

We hope do many great things as staffs — and we can’t wait for the students to arrive! 💜🤍

NEW STAFF ORIENTATION: PNGISD hosted its incoming new teachers and staff with a breakfast and orientation at the Administration Building today.

The admin team members were there to introduce themselves before also hearing the names, locations and years of educational experience of the new hires.

We're getting ready to welcome back all staffs to our campuses — and soon after — all students. Today, we celebrated just the first sparks in our plan to BE THE LIGHT for a brighter tomorrow!!

⚠️ TRAFFIC INFORMATION: Because of a pipeline project by Air Liquide, Park Street — from Highway 366 (Magnolia Ave.) — will be closed to through traffic for two weeks, from Friday, July 31-Friday, Aug. 14.

Park Street will be open near the high school, just not in front of the plant. For those traveling westbound/from Groves who wish to avoid school traffic on Merriman St., we recommend taking Spur 136 to Grigsby Ave. to access your district destinations.
