This 19th century war was monumental in establishing the United States-Mexico boundary. As a result of this hard-fought war, the United States gained the current Southwest. Mexico lost its northern provinces, including abandoning any future plans to reclaim Texas. The December 9 conference in take place in Port Isabel, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. The Port Isabel Event and Cultural Center is located in downtown Port Isabel, formerly named Point Isabel by the American Army that established its base of operations here in 1846. Museums are located within walking distance as is the historic Port Isabel Lighthouse built on the grounds of the former Fort Polk.
