Port Huron Elks Lodge 343 Elk Lodges bring so much to our communities. They are places where families, neighbors and children come together. Membership grew rapidly.

Elks invest in programs helping children, Veterans, and special needs children and adults, all while trying to improve the quality of life. A Short History of the Elks

The moving spirit of the Elks was an Englishman named Charles Algemon Sidney Vivian. Born October 22, 1842, this son of a clergyman was a successful comic singer and dancer in the music halls of London. In November 1867, Vivian arrived in New York City to try his luck. Other actors and entertainers soon gravitated toward his magnetic personality and this group dubbed themselves the Jolly Corks, a name derived from a practical joke of the time. When a friend of Vivian and other members of the Jolly Corks died, leaving his wife and children destitute, the Jolly Corks agreed that it was now time to create a more enduring organization, one that, while still committed to good fellowship, would serve those in need. On February 16, 1868, they established the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States. Its social activities and benefit performances increased the popularity of the new Order. Elks traveling to other cities spread the word of the brotherhood of Elks. Soon there were requests for Elks lodges in cities other than New York. In response to these appeals, the Elks asked the New York State legislature for a charter authorizing the establishment of a Grand Lodge with the power to establish local lodges anywhere in the United States. When the Grand Lodge Charter was issued, the founders then received their first local chapter as New York Lodge No. 1 on March 10, 1871. Over the years, the Elks mission has been consistent and the membership has become more inclusive. Today's guidelines for membership stipulate only that the candidate be invited to join, be over the age of 21, be a citizen of the United States, and believe in God. The legacy of Charles Vivian's generosity continues to this day. As long as there are those who need help, the Elks will be there to give aid and comfort. The Elks are a fraternal order with nearly a million members in communities all over the country, a generous foundation that each year gives millions of dollars in scholarships, an inspiration to youth, a friend to veterans and more. Our story is long; our work is humble; our history is proud. The Elks are involved in a wide variety of programs, from scholarships to drug education to Veterans Services. Port Huron Elks Lodge 343 was established in 1895 and is one of 2100 nationwide.

The Port Huron Elks Lodge 343 held our 88th blood drive, on Monday, September 21st as we continue to help us close the gap on blood shortages! (38) donors arrived to provide the ”Gift of Life”. (29) whole blood pints, and (6 Power reds = 12 pints) were collected, for a total of (41) total units. We had ONE first time donor.

Working together, the Port Huron Elks Lodge 343, and the American Red Cross we have collected over 3,028 units (pints) which equals over 378.5 gallons of blood since our 1st drive on January 7, 2013. With this drive we met our goal of 3,000 pints!

We are now onto our next goal 3,200 pints (400 gallons). Our 89h drive is scheduled for Monday, October 19th, 10 donors have already scheduled appointments, thank you!

VETERANS CORNER #64

Members from Lodge 343 were able to spend Sunday afternoon, August 9th attending the annual St. Clair County Honor Guard picnic at American Legion Post 382. During the event, (pictured) Lodge 343 Veterans Committee Chair Scott R. Harris, DDGER, ENVSC Rep presented William E. Livesay Sr., USAF CMS-GI Retired and Command Chief with a donation on behalf of Lodge 343 Veterans fund.

This was to assist the Legion Veterans with the meal cost for the over (30) Honor Guard members, a few of them Lodge 343 members, along with Spouses & Family who attended. Scott also thanked them for assisting our Lodge 343 through the years with our Flag Day service, Funeral Services, Memorial services, and many other special events.

Congratulations to our very own Lodge 343 Monica G. Franks, now a recognized ENVSC Deputy Representative for the Michigan Veterans Home At Chesterfield and a continual volunteer at the Yale VA.

ENVSC & Lodge 343 continues with our monthly $25.00 free Marathon Gas Gift card "give-a-way" program now in our 4th year. For the month of August, Larry Rader, Us Army and Troy Cooper, Us Army names were drawn, congratulations!

We would personally like to say THANK YOU, to our 2023-2026 CLUB 343 Committee members, Gary & Penny Osburn and Alan & Kim Krug for their VERY generous $1,000.00 donation to our Lodge 343 Veterans restricted funds. You should know through the years, all of past CLUB 343 committees have continued to support our Veterans as well.

Upcoming Events: Our next bi-monthly free "Coffee & Donut Days" will be on Wednesday, October 14th, then again on Thursday, Deçember 10th in the Veterans Wellness room at the Yale. A NOVEMBER reminder, we will hold our annual Hot Dog & Brat Roast on Tuesday, November 10th from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm for Veterans, Active Military, First Responders & Spouses at the Yale VA, Veterans Clinic. Please feel free to stop in, even without a scheduled appointment, we would enjoy your company.

Mark your calendars now for the next Veterans Appreciation Day & FREE Luncheon on Wednesday, May 19, 2027, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. This event is held annually on the 3rd Wednesday in May with over (30) service providers in attendance. These events are sponsored by Port Huron Elks Lodge 343, the MiElks Association, ENVSC, and McLaren-Port Huron Yale VA.
