Beginners driving astern basics:

• Be aware of which way the stern is falling. New operators often fixate on the bow and don’t notice stern movement developing.

• Make small corrections early. Don’t wait until the tug is well off track and then need large RPM changes to recover.

• Practice in open water first. Then work in front of another tug. A ship should be the final step.

• Driving astern is one of the harder ASD skills to master. Get comfortable with walking the tug first.

• At slower speeds, more advanced operators may briefly use a “walk” drive position (one drive angled forward) to help maintain control.
