Two days. Big ideas. Endless possibilities! Educators recently came together for the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning’s (CITL) Design Camp, two energizing days filled with learning, collaboration, and creativity, led by Dr. Jill Berardi, Assistant Superintendent for Learning and Design.

On Day 1, teams tackled the Brilliant Bionics design challenge using Makedo tools. Inspired by nature, they designed and built bionic enhancements to help the Ulster BOCES Central Office crew complete everyday tasks more easily, safely, quickly, or accessibly. Through empathy interviews, prototype testing, feedback, and a spirited final competition, participants embraced every step of the design thinking process with plenty of creativity and laughter along the way!

On Day 2, educators turned their attention to the future, working in teams to imagine the possibilities ahead at CITL’s Deeper Learning Lab School, opening at our Port Ewen campus in September 2027. They created handcrafted models of four labs, explored how each space could function independently and collaboratively, and helped strengthen one another’s ideas through thoughtful feedback. This was all based on the New York Inspires elements at the core of the work ahead.

The Design Camp concluded with an energized team, an inspiring vision, and a shared commitment to building a future-focused Lab School that will best serve our students.

The Educator Edge recently participated in the Team Leadership Training for Implementing Restorative Practices, sponsored by the New York State Education Department and hosted by Dutchess BOCES.

Strong leadership is essential to creating schools where every learner feels a sense of belonging. Through this professional learning, our team strengthened the knowledge and skills needed to support the successful implementation of restorative practices across schools and districts.

Research shows that leaders who are committed to restorative practices are key to driving systemic change that fosters belonging, equity, healing, and stronger school communities. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue learning alongside educators from across New York State as we work to support transformational leadership in education.

Last month, educators, leaders and change-makers from across the state and beyond came together at the Deeper Learning New York 2026 Conference to explore what is possible when we reimagine education through the lens of student-centered learning.

We were honored to hear from New York State Education Commissioner Dr. Betty A. Rosa, whose message reinforced a vision of education grounded in equity, belonging and opportunity. Her leadership exemplifies a commitment to putting student rights and hearts at the center of every decision in education, inspiring meaningful conversations about creating learning environments where every student can thrive.

Thank you to everyone who helped make an inspiring experience and for continuing to lead the work of creating learning communities where every student can succeed.
