Caution trees in captivity!

We are feeling pretty good about our method of buying cheap bare root trees and then growing them in captivity for a year. This group will get a year more growing time free of deer browsing and will be planted this fall with as much deer protection as we can provide.

Meet Ryan! Ryan joined the crew after already having experience working at a local land trust doing stewardship work. So he already knows all of the agony and thorns of invasive species management and came back for more! Happy to have him on the crew this year.

Meet Jaiden! Jaiden is working part-time for my project and part-time for this summer. He already completed a sustainability internship in a previous semester so comes to this position with lots of experience! So excited to have him on the team!

Meet Willow! Willow is an environmental studies major with a strong interest in marine conservation. Let's hope this terrestrial summer can convince her that life on land is where all the fun is!

Meet summer technician Angela! Angela is an environmental studies major who is our resident tree expert (although everyone else is learning fast). I'm very excited to have Angela on this project for the summer and she is continuing to work with me next year on her senior project looking at Spotted Lantern fly abundances in different forest compositions. Stay tuned for more updates on that project!

Our summer got off to such a fast start that I haven't yet introduced all of the new technicians working on this project. So it's time to meet the technicians in their natural habitat!

Meet Christina! Rocking her field work assignment of measuring trees and cutting invasives and making it look easy. Christina is a biology major who took Conservation Biology with me this past semester and I'm so happy she is on the crew!

Today we got to celebrate the official kick-off of our Reforestation project by unveiling this beautiful banner with design and art all by Purchase student Ailani Perez. Ailani is a major and minor who interned on the project this spring. We love to see these cross discipline connections on such beautiful display.

Huge thank you to Ailani and all the spring interns who helped workshop this banner.

Tree tube success against hungry deer in a cold winter! Excited to have the summer technicians do a full inventory of how the seedlings are looking out at the Blind Brook site... But we just need to get through finals and commencement first!

Reflecting today on how wonderful it is to be on a campus where so many people are willing to help!

Solo field trip for me up to Saratoga to pick up tree seedlings today! I haven't bought from them before and got nervous about shipping them and having them get stressed. Looking forward to getting these potted this weekend and then we will have so many happy little trees for the fall
