The United Warriors Chess Foundation is proud to announce the return of the Texas Chess Association Junior Open!

After an extended hiatus, the Texas Chess Association Junior Open returns, and we are honored to host this prestigious championship in Brownsville, Texas.

This event will bring together junior players from across Texas to compete for Official Texas Chess Association Junior State Championship titles in the U8, U11, U15, and U21 divisions. The U8 and U11 Championships will be held on Saturday, August 15, while the U15 and U21 Championships will take place over two days on August 15-16.

In addition to individual awards, the Top 2 player-created teams in every section will receive team trophies, giving friends, classmates, club members, and teammates the opportunity to compete together. The U21 Championship will also be FIDE rated and will feature a guaranteed $1,000 prize fund.

The continued hosting of Texas Chess Association state championship events in Region VIII reflects the tremendous growth of chess in South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley. We are grateful to the Texas Chess Association for the opportunity to bring another premier championship to our community.

We encourage players and families to register early and join us as we celebrate the return of the Texas Chess Association Junior Open.

Our organization had the pleasure of hosting an official Texas Chess Association - TCA State Championship this weekend. The 2026 Texas Teams Chess Championship in Brownsville, Texas, was everything we dreamed of and more.

The team format brought a new level of excitement, and the atmosphere throughout the weekend was incredible. Our students competed in an environment where they know they are valued, appreciated, and supported. As always, the parents were there every step of the way, cheering on their kids and making the event even more special.

We want to give a huge shout out to one of the best chess players our region has ever produced, Christian Muraira, and his family’s daycare, Alphabet Playhouse, for helping sponsor this event and playing a major role in making it possible.

Valley Trophies came through yet again and helped sponsor this event as well. They are a huge part of our organization’s success, and we are very grateful for their continued support.

As an official Texas Chess Association State Championship, each first-place team earned the title of Texas State Champion in their respective section.

In the Championship Section, Team Legacy, led by President Jonathan Huerta, captured the championship belt and the title of Texas Team State Champions. The Molina family and Darek earned a well-deserved clear second place.

In the U1600 Section, Secretary Emilio Rodriguez and his team, Knights and Lady, claimed the Texas State Championship on tiebreaks after finishing with 3 match points alongside Los Intocables and Four Knights of the Cookie Jar. It was an incredibly competitive section that was not decided until the final round. In the Novice Section, Team 100 captured first place.

Thank you to everyone who supported this event. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to provide these experiences for the students of Region 8. This weekend was one to remember, and we are already looking forward to the next one.

A huge shout out to Tournament Director Brandon Flores for offering his tournament director services to our organization free of charge to give back to the students and the community.

Friday night we will be having the official Texas Teams State Championship Bughouse event! The venue will be a short 5 minute drive from the main event playing site. The event will begin at 7 P.M. and entry fee is $15, $30 per team. $150 will be awarded back in prize money. Register your team now!

After being awarded the bid to host the Texas Team Championship, and possibly another exciting tournament 👀, we want to make sure the students in our region are practicing regularly and preparing for a strong, competitive school year.

This Friday, July 10, we’ll be hosting a Friday Night Quad in San Benito. We look forward to welcoming chess players of all ages and skill levels. This tournament will be US Chess rated, and all players must have an active US Chess membership to participate.

This exciting statewide event brings together players of all ages and skill levels in a unique four-player team format. Build your team, represent your city, club, school, workplace, family, or group of friends, and compete for a Texas State Championship in one of three divisions.

The Championship Section winner will earn the title of 2026 Texas Team Chess Champion, take home $800 in prize money, and receive a custom championship belt.

With a guaranteed $1,600 prize fund, incredible awards, and one of the most exciting formats in Texas chess, we are proud to bring this event to Brownsville. The continued hosting of Texas state championship events in Region VIII reflects the tremendous growth of chess in South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley.

We encourage teams to register early and secure their spot. We have also created a dedicated website to make tournament information easy to access and navigate.

Our 2026 UWCF Summer Showdown sent a message to the region: our students deserve quality tournaments that prepare them for the intensity, pressure, and competition found at state and national events.

This weekend, our players competed fearlessly and with purpose. We are proud to announce that the tournament produced a combined +385 rating points across all sections, with several players gaining 50+ rating points in a single event. That kind of improvement is proof that our students need more opportunities to play strong competition and continue developing their skills.

Most importantly, we want to recognize the parents. The countless hours spent traveling, supporting, encouraging, and investing in these students are what make their success possible. The parents are truly the driving force behind the growth of chess in our region.

There is no offseason in this incredible sport, and UWCF remains committed to providing high-quality events that help our students improve while continuing to grow the chess community throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
