🏈PORT ARTHUR PRODUCT: JAYLON GUILBEAU’S JOURNEY FROM MEMORIAL TO THE NEXT LEVEL🏈

From Port Arthur Memorial to the bright lights of major college football, Jaylon Guilbeau has steadily built a career rooted in consistency and growth.

A four-star recruit and All-American Bowl selection out of Memorial High School, Guilbeau was one of the top defensive backs in Texas, helping anchor a defense that consistently shut down opponents. After a brief commitment shuffle, he ultimately took his talents to the University of Texas.

Over four seasons with the Longhorns, Guilbeau appeared in 43 games with 27 starts, totaling 124 tackles, 10 pass breakups, and an interception. His junior season in 2024 marked a breakout, as he racked up 58 tackles, while his senior campaign in 2025 saw him record a career-high nine tackles in a game and snag his first career interception.

Now chasing his NFL dream, Guilbeau signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent following the 2026 NFL Draft. Though he faced an early setback with a non-football injury designation during training camp, he continues to push forward. On Sunday, he earned a tryout opportunity with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

From Port Arthur standout to the professional stage, Guilbeau’s journey is a testament to perseverance and determination.

🏈MEMORIAL MADE: DAEVON ILES MAKING HIS MARK AT ODU🏈

From Port Arthur Memorial to the college stage, Daevon Iles is steadily building a name in the secondary.

The former three-star standout helped lead Memorial to a district title and deep playoff runs before taking his talents to Old Dominion. Now entering his third season, Iles has already made an impact, appearing in 23 career games.

In 2025, he took a major step forward—playing in all 13 games and earning his first career start in a Cure Bowl victory over South Florida. He finished the season with 37 tackles, one interception, and two pass breakups, including a career-high five tackles in multiple games.

After contributing on special teams and at safety in 2024, Iles has developed into a reliable defender, totaling 51 career tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and an interception.

With ODU set to open the 2026 season at Norfolk State on September 5, the Port Arthur product looks poised for an even bigger role in the Monarchs’ defense.

🏈FROM PORT ARTHUR TO FANTASY IMMORTALITY: JAMAAL CHARLES ENSHRINED IN ESPN HISTORY🏈

History has a Southeast Texas stamp on it.

ESPN officially unveiled its first-ever Fantasy Football Hall of Fame class, and while Randy Moss headlines the Players Wing, it’s a legendary performance from Port Arthur Memorial alum Jamaal Charles that’s etched forever in the Moments Wing.

December 15, 2013—fantasy football players still remember it like it was yesterday.

Charles delivered one of the greatest single-game performances the game has ever seen: 195 receiving yards, five total touchdowns, and a staggering 59.5 fantasy points. It wasn’t just dominant—it came in the fantasy playoffs, when it mattered most. In that moment, Charles didn’t just win games… he won championships.

His historic outing against the Raiders made him the first player in NFL history to record at least four receiving touchdowns and one rushing score in a single game. More than a decade later, it still stands as the gold standard for fantasy greatness.

From Port Arthur Memorial to fantasy football immortality, Jamaal Charles’ legacy continues to shine on one of the biggest stages in the game.

🎉 Congratulations to Yhosniel Velazquez, a 2026 Memorial graduate and current student at Texas Tech. He was recently hired to work with UIL at TTU!

Yhosniel was a key member of Memorial’s literary criticism team in his junior and senior years.

Several Texas colleges offer employment opportunities for former UIL competitors, and we love seeing our students take advantage of them!
