Happy Spring!

Happy from all of us at Point Reyes National Seashore, including this young, freshly-weaned northern elephant seal pup! Weaned pups are hanging out on our shores for a little while longer as they grow a little older. Now that their mothers have left them to go find food, they're teaching themselves how to swim before they head out on their first forage trip. This year, the weanlings have decided that Drakes Beach is a perfect place for them to hang out, and so Drakes Beach is closed to the public for the time being so that these little ones can rest - and this one decided that a little nap amongst the spring daisies was the perfect spot!

Though Drakes Beach is temporarily closed until the weanlings depart and the number of seals present on the beach declines, you can still get a fantastic view of the pups from the sidewalk there.

Thanks to our Interpretation & Natural Resources Assistant Ellen Murphy for this great shot! As always, please use your zoom lens when taking photographs of wildlife.
