Lapis is 23 years old and is already a mom.

Today kicks off the start of summer camp! Today our Jr. Oceanographer Camp started! Campers get to experience discovering our oceans through science and experiments! They get engaging lessons with games, leadership-building activities, and hands-on exhibit exploration.

We are also proud to have our partnership with Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary for this camp!

This is Enid and Bob!

They are both volunteers on the Seabird Affinity Group for the Olympic Coast Exploration Center! In addition to bringing information about the project to other birders and naturalist, they also are helping advise on the building design, especially bird collision deterrent strategies.

We had asked them why they chose to support the build and they said: “Seabirds tend to spend most of their lives far from shore, so this will be a rare opportunity for visitors to watch birds up close, learn about them, and be inspired to care for the ecosystems we all depend on. And really, who doesn’t love to watch puffins?”

Today is World Sea Turtle Day!

At Feiro, we have a Green Sea Turtle skeleton. Though we do not have Green Sea Turtles here in the Pacific Northwest, we are grateful to have this exhibit to show off these fascinating creatures.

Green Sea Turtles in the eastern North Pacific have been spotted from baja california to alaska but the majority of sightings are from San Diego, CA to the south. The populations of green sea turtles in the Pacific are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Primary due to harvesting from the beaches, as well as bycatch issues from commercial fishing.

What we can do to help sea turtles:
Stop using plastic bags and balloons: Juvenile green sea turtles feed mainly on sea jellies and other marine invertebrates. They can easily mistake a floating plastic bag or a balloon for sea jelly.

Call the hotline if you see a stranded sea turtle:
Marine Mammal Stranding Network in Oregon, Washington, and California at 1-866-767-6114.

Travel Responsibly: When visiting sea turtle habitats, take special precautions not to disturb nesting behavior or nest sites

Welcome Cooper!

Cooper is one of our new staff members! You can find them out front! They are our new Summer Guest Services Specialist.
Before joining the team, Cooper was a volunteer at Feiro for 2 years!
They currently attend University of Washington in Seattle. They are working on getting a double major in Marine Biology and Aquatic Conservation Ecology! Cooper was also one of our scholarship recipients!
In Cooper's free time, they like to listen to music, go to concerts, and even make jewelry!

We are so excited to welcome Cooper to the team!
