Longcruise 2026 is in the books it was hot it was cold it was fun. We had to replace one raw water pump belt, one coolant hose, clean out the sea strainer twice, we have yet to troubleshoot the nav lights on the aurora, the fuel filters on the aurora have been replaced, we have reached the break in milestone with the new engine, the fwd skylight needs to be replaced, the galley cabinet needs to be repaired. Adjustments to schedules were made an unplanned trip to a farm. There were up and downs but way more ups. Our quarterdeck did an excellent job leading the cruise. Great job scouts. A special thank you to all of the parents and the volunteer support staff that make our program possible.

Sea Scout Ship 1212 - Long Cruise day 6 - Blind Bay to Roche Harbor
We woke up to the rain yesterday morning with scouts all below deck which made for tight quarters as we have had deck sleepers every day this week. Lucky for us these Scouts can sleep anywhere! The Scouts readied the ship and boy did their mini clinics on the checklists yesterday pay off! The checklists were knocked out in 15 minutes with everything being confidently checked off the list. We headed out of Blind Bay in light rain to weave our way through Wasp Passage across North Pass and into Roche Harbor. The transit was uneventful with cinnamon rolls for breakfast baked underway. The boats were cleaned underway so that we could go ashore as soon as we arrived. The rain subsided as we rolled into Roche Harbor and tucked the boats into their guest slips. Hot showers were a necessity after two days on the hook. after showers Most Scouts went to the pool for a few hours of swimming and the always popular game of Marco Polo. Other Scouts wandered about town and checked out the waterfront. We enjoyed our final dinner of Long Cruise 2026 at Madrona’s on the waterfront. The food was amazing and the staff was wonderful. It was great to listen to the Scouts talk about this cruise, the things that went right, the things that went not so right, and about all the fun they have had enjoying each other’s company. After dinner, several Scouts enjoyed an Art Park walk and returned to the boats for the Roche Harbor Colors Ceremony (lowering of the flags). The Scouts chatted with our dock neighbor, a woman who was a Sea Scout in the 70s on the SSS Argo! The situation at bed time was a card game on KNG with most of the crew. The cabin was full of laughter and conversation and Scouts and chips…there’s always chips 😂. Today we head for Port Angeles.

Sea Scout Ship 1212 - Long Cruise day 5 - Blind Bay rest day.
We opted to hang in Blind Bay today to regroup and have a break from being underway, and it was a fun day! We all slept in! Breakfast burritos were on the menu and a meeting about our next few days was had. Roche tomorrow and home on Monday is the new plan. While we did not stick to our original plan to the north, working with what rolls our way is part of cruising. The Scouts have been resilient and understanding of the need to alter plans and are still smiling, bonding as a ship and generally just happy to be together and adventuring! While Scouts were shuttled to shore in the ‘Rona, the older scouts took two or three of the new scouts each and walked them through our vessel checklists, making sure they had a full understanding of what they were checking, why they were checking and hands on experience of how to check certain things. It was fantastic to see the leadership and to see the younger Scouts gain new knowledge to help them succeed. Once we were all ashore, we walked to Warm Valley Farm to stretch our legs and see what it was all about. We had a great time wandering the fields of vegetables and flowers, through the orchard and up to the sheep pasture, all while enjoying locally made goat milk ice cream (also there were ducks, noisy ducks). The farm was beautifuland peaceful and the owners were gracious and kind. And, it was great to get some exercise. Once back in town we started the process of shuttling scouts back to ships. Each group had an opportunity to practice rowing the ‘Rona, a necessary skill, when skipper tilted up the engine and handed out the oars (yes, we had gas in the tank this time 😜). The checklist training continued as each group returned to the ship. Ramen bowls were prepared for dinner and we sat around the boats eating, story telling and laughing. The laughter and stories are still ongoing and likely will be until lights out. We expect rain in the early morning and the anchor watch crews have their foulies ready. Rain is in the forecast throughout the day tomorrow, but don’t worry, rain never stopped these Scouts from enjoying a day on the water!

Sea Scout Ship 1212 - Long Cruise day 4- Cap Sante Marina to Blind Bay.
We woke in Cap Sante Marina, Anacortes after a restful evening. We had three scouts depart early due to prior obligations and various other reasons and we are sad they are not able to finish long cruise with us. We miss you already! We milled about until near check out time when we discovered an issue with the KNG engine cooling system. Parts were purchased from the local Napa store and repairs were underway until checkout time. With the repairs rushed, due to check out time, KNG was overheating as she exited the marina approach channel. Both boats headed into the adjacent anchorage and KNG crew dropped a hook until the Aurora was also hooked. KNG then pulled their hook and rafted up to the Aurora and our mechanic. Skipper came aboard and spent another hour on the engine repair. With the KNG finally ship shape and spitting water again we had to make some decisions. We lost some travel time seeing off our departing scouts and dealing with the engine repairs, and with the sad news of the sea plane crash (all survived) and ensuing investigation in Sucia, our next destination, we made the decision to return to the known waters of Blind Bay, that we anchored in the previous night, 3-4 hours away, so we could pivot and decide what our next moves will be. KNG motored while Aurora motor sailed a bit. The weather was beautiful, warm sun, cool light breeze. KNG had some knot tying and navigation lessons while underway to pass the time. Everyone is in good spirits and the scouts had a fun evening running the ‘Rona to Blind Island and Orcas while skipper prepared dinner. The crew is pretty tired today as the boat has been quiet for an hour already. The senior most scouts will be alternating hourly anchor watches through the night. And we will make some more decisions in the morning after rest. This year’s cruise sure has been eventful.

Parents, guardians and interested people alike. Our AIS is on and is transmitting. For what ever reason the website is not updating. We are sending and receiving information to surrounding vessels without any issues.

All is well we had mechanical issues in Anacortes this morning that have been repaired. And are anchored in Blind Bay for the evening.

Sea Scout Ship 1212 - Long Cruise day 3- Blind Bay to Cap Sante Marina, Anacortes.
We had an uneventful night at anchor in Blind Bay with the Scouts having held 1 hour rotating anchor watches throughout the night. We had some light showers in the early morning and woke to breezy conditions. We took our time readying the boats, but the anticipation of sailing was on everyone’s minds. Around 10:30 the KNG dropped lines and motored away from the anchored Aurora. Aurora pulled anchor and both boats motored out of the bay. We soon had sails up as we crossed Upright Channel and sailed in perfect conditions for a few hours down the west side and Southern tip of Blakely Island. Here, the Aurora motor sailed on through to Rosario Strait where the south winds were considerably stronger and building. KNG got stuck in a hole with no wind and despite their best efforts to sail out of it, resorted to motor sailing on through and across Rosario to catch back up to the Aurora. Across Rosario the boats played follow the leader between Guemes and Fidalgo Islands and turned south to Cap Sante Marina. The wind was strong and gusting from the south and we were grateful to be heading to the shelter of the marina. With the boats tied up, the Scouts set out to explore Anacortes and spend some time ashore. A spirited giant chess match ensued outside the marina office. Shopping, snacks and general hanging out was the evening agenda. Chicken Fajita dinner was prepared on board and eating did not seem to interrupt the chatter and laughter that lasted all day, and continues as this post is written. All are looking forward to more sailing tomorrow and exploring Sucia for the next two days.
Oh yeah, it wouldn’t be cruising if something didn’t break, thanks to Skipper for the throttle cable repair an Aurora and the temporary duct tape cracked hatch repair on KNG 🤪.
