Every kid needs a champion Rita Pierson, a teacher for 40 years, once heard a colleague say, "They don't pay me to like the kids." Her response: "Kids don't learn from people they don't like.'" A rousing call to educators to believe in their students and actually connect with them on a real, human, personal level.

I love this! A good friend of mine sent me a random message today to thank me for my service as a teacher. She has no idea that she is one of the few who consistently recognizes the work that teachers do, and for that, I’m eternally grateful to her. Though I’m not in one single district anymore, I’m a teacher. I was a teacher yesterday, I’m a teacher today, and I’ll be a teacher on all my tomorrows. It’s not just what I do; it is truly a part of my identity. I couldn’t be prouder. 👨🏾‍🏫📚✏️🚌

The ultimate question we must ask ourselves as teachers, parents, and community stakeholders…Am I doing what’s best for KIDS? The answers must always be a resounding YES!

If the Simple View of Reading was published in 1986, why is the the percentage of people reading less today than in 1986?

Is the HQIM aligned to how reading should be taught? Remember that children can’t mimic or memorize their way into becoming readers. The instruction should be very much intentional! #1986

If you know me, you know I love words! In the midst of a conversation today, one of the educators I was working with needed a noun to represent the grumpy nature of another person…..insert CURMUDGEON. Add this to to already robust vocabularies; hopefully you don’t use it often! 😂😾

Regarding literacy, we have to dispel the fact that it only consists of reading and writing.

Reading is to literacy what adding is to numeracy—only ONE piece of the puzzle.

Actually, a child’s first modes of literacy are listening and speaking. We have to ensure that children get instruction in speaking and listening before they ever enter the school building. Conversations are important even when we don’t think they understand. Skilled listeners and speakers become great readers and writers.
