Seneca Highlands CTC Students Explore Career Pathways Through Interactive Mobile Learning Lab Experiences

Students recently participated in a series of engaging, hands-on Mobile Learning Lab sessions provided by Alfred State College, bringing career exploration and experiential learning directly into the classroom.

The Mobile Learning Lab, coordinated through Alfred State’s outreach programming, introduced students to a variety of high-demand career fields through immersive activities designed to promote critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.

One of the featured experiences was the highly interactive Abra-Cadaver lesson, provided through Alfred State’s Mobile Learning Lab program. During the session, students participated in a mock crime scene investigation where they explored introductory concepts in criminal justice and forensic science. Activities included crime scene analysis, mock autopsy procedures using the cadaver replica “Abra,” presumptive blood testing, blood typing, and powder fingerprinting. Students gained hands-on exposure to careers in forensic science, criminal justice, and law enforcement while applying observational and investigative skills in a realistic setting.

Students also attended a Radiologic Technology Modalities presentation led through the Mobile Learning Lab program. The informational session introduced students to the many specialties within radiologic technology and highlighted the important role imaging professionals play in healthcare. Students learned about diagnostic imaging equipment, educational pathways, and career opportunities within the medical field.

Another student favorite was the Animal Radiograph Lesson, which combined concepts from veterinary technology, animal science, and radiologic technology. During the activity, students examined animal x-rays to identify body parts, determine species, and even infer dietary habits based on the radiographs. The lesson encouraged analytical thinking and teamwork while providing a fun and memorable learning experience.

In addition to technical career exploration, students also participated in a Career Skills Workshop focused on workforce readiness and transferable skills development. The workshop emphasized communication, professionalism, collaboration, and career planning strategies that students can apply throughout high school and into future careers.

The Mobile Learning Lab initiative continues to provide students with valuable opportunities to connect classroom learning to real-world career pathways. Through innovative and interactive programming, students gain exposure to careers in healthcare, criminal justice, veterinary science, skilled trades, and other growing industries.

Seneca Highland Career and Technical Center Students Secure Industry-Recognized Networking Certifications

Seneca Highland Career and Technical Center (SHCTC) is proud to announce that several students in Mr. Bryant’s networking class have successfully earned prestigious industry certifications, marking a significant milestone in their technical education and career readiness.

The participating students worked to earn the Ascend Education 1201 and 1202 certificates. Learners who successfully mastered both curriculums were awarded the Ascend A+ certification. Notably, this certification is recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as an approved pathway toward high school graduation requirements, highlighting the academic and professional rigor of the program.

"We are incredibly proud of these students for their dedication to mastering complex networking concepts," said Mr. Bryant. "Earning these certifications gives them a competitive edge as they prepare to enter the workforce or pursue higher education in the technology sector."

Seneca Highlands CTC Health Assistance Student Nominated for Florence Nightingale Class Representative

May 6-12 marks National Nurse’s Week. During this time, the Seneca Highlands Health Assistance class will begin to celebrate those people who have contributed significantly to nursing. The end of the week is the birthday of one of the most influential nurses throughout history, Florence Nightingale.

Due to her excellent achievement in class combined with her displays of professionalism, collaboration, and leadership, Autumn Ford has been chosen as the class representative for Florence Nightingale this week.

Autumn is a sophomore from Oswayo Valley. She is currently pursuing her training as a nursing assistant. In January, she attended the District 6 SkillsUSA competition in medical assisting. Some other achievements Autumn has made this year include earning her OSHA 10 certificate and BLS certification.

Celebrating National Nurses Week by Exploring the History of Healthcare

In recognition of National Nurses Week, students in Mrs. Barth’s health assistance class at the Seneca Highlands Career and Technical Center are preparing to celebrate the history of healthcare.

This weeklong event includes a birthday party on May 12th, in remembrance of Florence Nightingale. After courageously veering from the traditional stereotypes of what women could contribute to society, Miss Nightingale paved the way for nursing to become a respectable profession. She was an educated woman who used her knowledge, compassion, and skill to determine causes of illness in hopes of improving the overall state of health in Skutari Hospital during the Crimean War. She and her corps of nurses did not receive a warm welcome at the hospital from the traditionally male-dominated environment. Her steadfast determination eventually resulted in huge strides in infection control, mental health treatment, and nursing research.

During the week, students look at people and significant historical events. To examine the impact of these things, they do a deep dive into the past, present, and future of healthcare. Healthcare advancement has benefited from significant contributions of many physicians, psychologists, and scientists along the way. These people have bravely explored technology and pushed boundaries to give us the ability to see inside the human body and to develop new treatments and medications that keep us well or prevent illness from happening.

Today, nurses are utilized as direct caregivers and even primary care providers. They are respected teachers, providers, and politicians, thanks to their multifaceted education and experiences. Their compassion and commitment to patient-focused care make nurses instrumental in driving socioeconomic change in relation to healthcare disparities. Nursing is not a career for the faint of heart. This field requires the highest integrity and a willingness to sacrifice one’s own agenda for the good of society. The academic requirements to become a nurse include a higher standard than for many other college majors. There is also a rigorous clinical component to the program that requires the same high standards for integrity, professionalism, and patient care.

The future looks promising for healthcare. New technologies that improve access and advance treatments are popping up every day. Seneca Highlands’ health assistance program prepares students to enter into employment or post-secondary education for various careers in healthcare. Perhaps some of the students graduating will become involved in engineering further changes.

This week’s events are designed to pique the curiosity and ingenuity of our students in the health assistance program so that they may be the future leaders in the quest toward wellness. We look forward to learning what our students have discovered about this fascinating world of healthcare.

Seneca Highlands CTC Heavy Equipment Students Visit Pennsylvania College of Technology Diesel Equipment Technology Facility

Students from the Heavy Equipment Maintenance program from SHCTC visited the Schneebeli Earth Science Center on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 in Williamsport, PA.

The students had the opportunity to view a presentation given by an Enrollment Counselor. A tour was provided of the Diesel Equipment Technology facility, both on-site and off-site. Lunch was provided in Nature's Cove, and the day concluded with a College Readiness & Academic Preparedness presentation.

Seneca Highlands CTC's "Student of the Week"

We are pleased to announce that the Seneca Highlands CTC engineering student of the week is Carson Cooney. Carson is a senior at Austin Area High School, where he participates in basketball, football, and is a member of their Black Forest Falcons trap team. During his high school career, he has also been active in Student Council, NHS, and the CTC’s Student Committee.

While participating in trap, Carson qualified for states and nationals the past five years. He was recently recognized as the region four Defensive Lineman of the Year and was selected for the Big Thirty All-Star football game.

Carson also enjoys hunting, fishing, and traveling with his family. At the CTC, he displays leadership in our shop while obtaining OSHA certifications and working with the CNC wood router. Carson will be attending Slippery Rock University in the fall, majoring in safety management.
