Retirement of Superintendent, Mr. Arty Tillett

POQUOSON, VA – August 21, 2026 – Following Superintendent Arty Tillett’s announcement of his intent to retire during the 2026-27 school year, the Poquoson City School Board will begin the process of identifying the next superintendent of Poquoson City Public Schools.

Mr. Tillett, who has devoted 35 years to public education, has announced his intention to retire between January and June 2027. The specific retirement date will be determined in collaboration with the School Board as the superintendent search and transition process moves forward.

“This is not a decision I have made lightly. Serving as Superintendent of Poquoson Schools has been one of the greatest honors of my professional career,” said Tillett. “I am proud of the culture we have built and continue to strengthen- a culture centered on students, strong relationships, high expectations, and a genuine commitment to excellence.”

The school board is committed to conducting a thorough search designed to identify a highly qualified leader who will build upon the division’s strengths and its commitment to students, staff, families, and Poquoson community. Additional information regarding the superintendent search process, including opportunities for stakeholder input and an anticipated timeline, will be shared with the community as details are finalized.

“We appreciate Mr. Tillett’s time here for the past six years and all of the work that he has accomplished during his tenure,” said School Board Chair Dr. Chris Burbage. “We also appreciate his commitment to working alongside the Board and incoming superintendent to provide continuity and support throughout the leadership transition. The Board will conduct a thorough search for the next superintendent of Poquoson Schools to ensure we select the very best leader for our students, staff, and community.”

In his retirement announcement, Tillett emphasized that his decision does not diminish his commitment to Poquoson Schools. “While this announcement marks the beginning of a process, it does not change my commitment to the work ahead. I remain fully invested in Poquoson Schools and look forward to continuing to serve our students and staff and to working with the School Board and our community to ensure a smooth and successful transition.”

The School Board recognizes the importance of community engagement throughout this process and will provide updates as the search progresses. The Board’s goal is to ensure a thoughtful and seamless leadership transition while maintaining the strong momentum and commitment to excellence that continues to define Poquoson City Public Schools.

UPDATE: Everything has been fixed

Classroom placement and secondary schedules were supposed to be released today but there is a major issue with our LMS (PowerSchool) and Communication Platform (ParentSquare) syncing. We have our technology teams working to review and rectify this. As soon as it is repaired, another notification will be sent out to inform you. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
