The three athletes that attended the Top Ten Track Meet did a nice job last night. Mathew Rattling Thunder went into the 3200 in 9th place and ran a wonderful race to move him up to 5th. AJ had to battle the wind in the Discus and ended up in 7th . He also competed in the Shot Put and came out in 5th place. Katrina competed in the Shot Put and moved up one spot to finish in 9th place. Over all this is a great achievement to qualify for this meet because it covers the area from Havre-ND Border and south just before Miles City with all classes of schools competing. Our athletes represented us very well.

We had such a great day yesterday in Glasgow that I decided to send out an email of the results to everyone.

Kylee Stump: 1st in 200 m and 3rd in the 100 m
Katrina Whiteman: 1st in Shot Put and 3rd in Discus
Janaeya Sutherland: 4th in Shot Put and 5th in Discus
Aniston Sampson: 3rd in 1600 m

There were a lot of other great performances by our tracksters. Many of them hitting personal bests, even if they didn’t place in the top six. So, make sure to tell them good job as well. Other participants: Jessica Pipe, Caitlyn Whiteman, Dionna Hopkins, Kamryn Azure, Heaven Escarcega, Alex Smith, Richard, Brown, Boy Youngman, Dion Hopkins, and Jacob Lone Bear.

We had an outstanding turnout for our district music festival. The students’ hard work was very apparent. I had complements from Judges and other teachers in the district about the complexity, difficulty, and completion of music from our chorus, as well as the amazing improvement and musicality of our band. The judges specifically appreciates how advanced the band has become just a couple of years. The chorus scored Rankings of 2, just a couple points off from 1. Our band scored a 1 and 2, with a point separating us from straight 1s. We had several solos and ensembles a point or two off of 1 (many of them participating in district for their first time). I am very proud to say that Jessica Pipe, with a score of 28 (two point off of a perfect score), will be heading to the State festival in Billings at the beginning of May as Poplar’s representative at the State level. If you see her, please congratulate her and wish her the best of luck. I am so proud of all our students and look forward to having not only more participate next year, but also have many more high rankings. It is amazing to see not only the growth of Poplar’s music program, but also the growth of students as successful musicians and talented individuals.

8th Grade Finalists!!
Each year I have my students submit a paper to the Montana Board of Crime Control in an essay contest called “Do the Write Thing.” In this essay they address the tough issue of youth violence. There are dozens of school who participate across the state of Montana including all of the “AA” schools. This year there were hundreds of submissions and from those they select the to 5 males and the top 5 females. Well I am proud to announce that we have 2 of the top five females in the state of Montana coming out of Poplar Middle School! Our finalists are Myah Young and Marris Kohl! Both of these ladies will read their papers in the capital building on April 11th in front of an audience consisting of 60+ people. From there the judges will select 1 male and 1 female to represent Montana as Montana Ambassadors in Washington DC this summer at the national convention! So if you see either of these ladies in the hallway please give them a big KUDOS!!

What's with all the DRAMA!!!!!

This spring, Poplar High School students will present a double feature! Two one-act plays: Drop Dead, Juliet! and Flowers for Algernon. In Drop Dead, Juliet!, our heroine Juliet has had enough! Enough with the poison, enough with the stabbing, and especially enough with the dying. She wants a new story and she wants it now. More parts for girls! More romance! Less death! Romeo and Juliet will never be the same—or will it? Not everyone’s so keen on the changes. And why is Romeo sneaking off with Rosaline?

Flowers for Algernon is about a laboratory mouse who has undergone surgery to increase his intelligence by artificial means. The story is told by a series of progress reports written by Charlie Gordon, the first human test subject for the surgery. When something goes terribly wrong, Charlie must cope with the consequences.

Dates for Play are April 14 and 16 at 7:00 in PHS auditorium

Student Council sold spirit shirts for Districts to promote school spirit. They have also put on high school dances throughout the school year. They also put on a community pep rally before the winter sports season started. They have scheduled a movie night for high schools students on March 13.

Pep Club put on a Pep Rally for the Winter Sports before Districts. Cheerleaders put on spirit competitions and there was a spirit yell, as well as coaches introducing their teams.

Honors and Awards!!!

7/8 BBB completed their season February 14. Poplar had 21 boys participate in basketball. Both squads did well and learned a lot throughout their season.

HS Wrestling-Angel Boyd took 3rd at Divisional and wrestled well at state as a Freshman.

Poplar will host Wrestling Divisional next year for the Eastern Division!!

HSGBB, BBB and Cheerleading completed their season at District. They are an amazing group of students. We received many compliments throughout the season about their dress attire and respect they showed to everyone. The teams also had a start quilt ceremony at District.

For the first time in ten years Poplar High School had a Pep Band at district. They did a fabulous job playing!

Honor Band and Choir was held in Glasgow on January 26. There were 20 choral students and 5 band students who participated. Students practiced all day with other students from the surrounding area with professional conductors and performed in concert that evening.

BPA took seven students to compete in Sidney on January 21. Boy Youngman qualified for state in Information Technology Concepts. He took 9th overall. Damon Sadler qualified as an Alternate.
