A startling number is changing the argument over Poland’s border strategy.
Polish authorities say attempted illegal crossings from Belarus collapsed from more than 10,600 in the first five months of 2025 to just 215 during the same period of 2026—a reported decline of roughly 98 percent. Warsaw points to stronger barriers, electronic surveillance, tougher enforcement and new legal measures. For supporters, the message seems obvious: determined border control can dramatically change migration patterns. But the numbers do not resolve the most difficult question. Some people approaching the frontier may be migrants, others may have legitimate protection claims, and some may have been manipulated by actors exploiting them.
