A knee positioned at the right angle.

Knowing where your weight should be before you move.

Understanding not just what to do, but why it works.

The small instructions can feel repetitive, but they are what turn a technique from “I kind of get it” into something reliable under pressure.

Pay attention. Ask questions. Drill with purpose. Respect the details.

**PSA: When Visiting Another School**

Take a moment to read the room. Every academy has its own culture, training intensity and rules. Respect the coaches, the students and the way they run their room.

Some schools follow IBJJF style rules closely while others may allow techniques that would be off-limits elsewhere. Neither is automatically right or wrong. But when you’re visiting, it’s not your job to judge or change their culture.

You are a guest. Act like one.

You’re not there to win rounds, prove something or boost your ego. If the room trains hard, train hard. If they’re flow rolling, flow roll. Match the pace, train safely, and be a good partner.

Thank them for welcoming you onto their mats. And if their vibe isn’t for you, that’s okay—you’re only visiting anyway.

Common courtesy goes a long way.

Quitting once changes everything.

The first time you skip class “just because,” your brain learns: It’s okay to break promises to myself.

At PVBJJ, we see what happens when kids are allowed to quit:

They learn that when things get hard, boring or frustrating, the answer is to walk away.
That lesson doesn’t stay on the mat. It shows up in school, in friendships, in every challenge life throws at them.

JiuJitsu teaches more than techniques. It teaches:

• I show up when I don’t feel like it.
• I push through when it’s tough.
• I don’t negotiate with my own standards.

Every time a kid (or adult) chooses the mat over the excuse, they’re not just getting better at jiujitsu. They’re building a mindset that screams:

I don’t quit.
