The tomahawk is far more than an iconic piece of history.

For centuries, variations of the tomahawk and hand axe served as both essential tools and formidable weapons. Early Indigenous examples were made from stone and wood; after European contact, forged iron and steel heads became increasingly common through trade and exchange.
Its effectiveness came from simplicity and versatility. Compact enough to carry, powerful enough to deliver significant force, and useful as both a working tool and a weapon, the tomahawk earned its place in the close-quarter fighting systems of its time.

Historical accounts document tomahawks and hatchets being used in hand-to-hand combat alongside knives, war clubs, bows, and fi***rms. Their role wasn't theoretical—they were practical weapons carried by people who depended on their equipment for survival and warfare.

The design is brilliant in its simplicity: an edge, a weighted head, a handle providing leverage and reach, and—in some historical designs—a hammer, spike, or pipe opposite the cutting edge.
Technology changes. The principles behind effective weapons do not.

The tomahawk remains one of history’s most recognizable examples of a simple tool adapted into a highly versatile close-quarter weapon.

I SEE ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVE AN ISSUE WHEN THEY RUN EMPTY, BUT DON'T GET SLIDE LOCK.

IF YOU GET A CLOCK INSTEAD OF A BANG AND YOUR SLIDE DIDN'T LOCK YOUR NEXT STEP SHOULD BE AN IMMEDIATE ACTION DRILL NOT THE ASSUMING OF A RELOAD.

Something I see constantly on the range is shooters firing until they get a click instead of a bang, but the slide hasn’t locked to the rear.

They immediately assume the gun is empty.

The problem is, a click without slide lock doesn’t necessarily tell you why the gun didn’t fire. If you automatically go straight to a reload, you may be going through the motions instead of actually diagnosing and solving the problem in front of you.

This is exactly why your immediate-action and emergency-reload procedures need to be trained until they are consistent and efficient.

On the range, it’s easy to stop, look at the gun, think about what happened, and then decide what to do. Under pressure, you may not have that luxury.

Train the problem, not just the drill.

Malfunction work and emergency reloads shouldn’t be occasional additions to fi***rms training. They should be skills you revisit constantly so that when the gun doesn’t do what you expect, your response is deliberate, efficient, and repeatable.

Don’t just go through the motions on the range. Train with purpose.
