What can a history degree teach you about winning a lawsuit? Turns out, quite a lot. ⚖️📚

For CPP alum Louie Ruis (‘11, history), the research, evidence analysis, and critical thinking skills he developed in the CPP history department as a student paved the way for his career as an attorney.

Today, Ruiz has two law offices in Ontario and Los Angeles, where he and his firm do pro bono work for Catholic nuns and other clients in need. Additionally, Ruiz is paying it forward to CPP through his active role in the CPP Latin Alumni Association and giving to the Hilda Solis Scholarship Fund to help CPP students achieve their goals.

Hands-on learning at an architecture National Historic Landmark as a CPP student helped Saba Salekfard become what she is today. The CPP architecture professor is the new resident director of the Neutra VDL House.

She has come full circle at the Silver Lake residence designed by renowned architect Richard Neutra and operated under our College of Environmental Design’s stewardship as a center for architecture, art, culture, education and public engagement.

A CPP architecture alumna and current faculty member, Salekfard will utilize the landmark as a living site of experimentation, continuing the legacy of CPP's hands-on learning philosophy that helped launch her career.

What does it mean to leave something behind? For alum Jeffrey McDonnell, it meant helping the next generation build what comes next.

McDonnell (’85, civil engineering) spent three decades building SoCal’s water infrastructure while sharing what he knew with the people around him.

After his unexpected passing in 2023, his friends chose to carry that spirit of generosity back to his alma mater with a $500,000 gift to CPP’s College of Engineering:

🔹$200,000 to establish a permanent scholarship for civil engineering students
🔹$300,000 to create an engineering design bay in McDonnell’s name, giving students space to turn drawings into real-world projects

The students who use that space may never meet McDonnell, but his legacy will be part of their CPP experience, helping them engineer solutions for the future.

Two years at CPP. One final semester. A whole lot of memories. 🫶

For communication student Annika, her time at CPP has meant finding community as a transfer student, getting career-ready with on-campus jobs and internships in her field, and making connections through campus events and clubs.

CPP became a discovery hub for Kindergarten through 9th-grade students during 3 STEM summer camps, hosted by the CEIS and ENV colleges.

These got hands-on experience by:
💧 Testing water and air quality
🦝 Tracking the wildlife around campus
🌱 Exploring ecosystems at the Lyle Center, BioTrek, and Bonelli Park
🗺️ Using ArcGIS Field Maps to collect data and investigate their surroundings
💻 Coding with Micro:bits, programming, and experimenting with motors
🎨 Creating and designing projects using color theory, art, and engineering

A campus-wide effort to bring the California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA) to CPP is the winner of CPP’s 2026 One Team Award! 🎨🎭 🎬 ✍️

The team brought together faculty and staff from more than 20 departments to prepare for the four-week residential program, hosting more than 500 high school students and approximately 150 faculty members on campus this past summer.

The program increases CPP’s visibility as a home for arts-based programs that incapsulate .
