Content Warnings: Police Brutality, Death, Shootings, Racism, Incarceration
oSTEM @ CPP maintains a strong stance against police brutality, in light of the recent murders of Tyre Nichols and Keenan Anderson. Mr. Nichols was a skateboarder and artist, Mr. Anderson was a teacher, and both were fathers with many aspirations. With the images and videos floating around recently, we encourage our fellow students to seek support from the , CAPS, or any of the cultural centers.
We acknowledge that the American prison-industrial complex has always been built upon racist foundations, and that it funds and enables law enforcement who violently abuse their authority, especially over Black and Brown citizens. This loss of life also serves as a reminder of the need to reform the way we as a society handle mental health. In lieu of criminalization and police action, we need to treat it as a social concern addressed with community programs and rehabilitation.
We want to raise awareness of the proposed Cop City, set to destroy a last-remaining forest in Atlanta to build a police training complex. Its construction would threaten the Black communities of Atlanta with more over-policing. Protests have even resulted in the police also killing nonbinary Latinx activist, Manuel “Tortuguita” Esteban Paez Terán.
Along the same vein, oSTEM @ CPP also maintains an anti-gun stance overall, especially in light of the recent mass shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay this past month. We also acknowledge the continuing patterns of Asian hate and mourn the loss of life.
The fight needs to continue to defund the police, abolish the prison-industrial complex, and ban gun accessibility at local and federal levels.
