In DP1 Lesson 22, we explore the form and style of 19th and early 20th century scientific botanical illustrations. These illustrations provided detailed information about different plant species and their specific characteristics before the invention and mainstream use of photography. They were often the only way the general public could see non-native plant species from around the world in the era before globalization and widespread travel.

Did you know that the earliest known oil painting was discovered in Bamiyan, Afghanistan? The Bamiyan Murals were constructed of oil paint in the 7th century C.E., hundreds of years before the technique was popularized in Europe. In DP2 Lesson 15, we learn about the historical origins of oil paint to enrich our material experimentations with oils.
