Dance practices are beginning this week!

Our students are excited to begin learning their songs and preparing for what will be a beautiful community event. We highly encourage parents, family members, and loved ones to come out and join our students during practices. Your presence will help them feel comfortable, confident, and supported as they learn and practice their songs.

Please see the dance practice schedule posted below.

The following note went home with students on Friday about the Indian Day (9/11/26) dance groups. Please help your student make their choice for the dance group they would like to participate in and send the completed note back to school on Monday August 24th. If your student was absent on Friday and didn’t receive a note please hand write your choices and send them back to the school with your student.

We want to encourage students to dance and participate in whichever group they would like. If you or your family don’t have the traditional clothing needed for a dance group, please don’t let that stop your child from dancing. We want every student to feel included and have the opportunity to be part of Indian Day.

Let’s make this a special celebration of our culture, traditions, and our students!

We were grateful to receive a surprise visit from Miss Hopi Kerissa Poli'mana Ben. She generously shared her beautiful dual-language book, The Girl Who Befriended the Huhuwa, Maana Huuhuwat Kwatsata, written in both Hopi and English, with our school.

This meaningful book supports Ms. Ben’s platform and provides a wonderful resource for promoting the learning and use of Hopi lavayi in our school. We sincerely appreciate her generosity and thoughtfulness in sharing this work with our students and staff. We look forward to utilizing this book as we continue our efforts to encourage the learning, teaching, and everyday use of Hopi lavayi throughout our school community. Askwali-Kwah’kwaii

Thank you to all of the parents, guardians, and extended family members who made it to our Open House tonight!

We know there were some scheduling conflicts with surrounding schools also hosting their open houses this evening, but we saw everyone put forth their best efforts to make it happen. It was wonderful to see so many families throughout our school and, most importantly, to see our students take pride in showing their families around FMES.

Everyone made a pit stop in the library for a scavenger hunt, visited with our bus drivers, explored classrooms, had a fun experience in the computer lab, and ended the evening by spinning the prize wheel!

One of the highlights of the evening was our “Positivi-Tree,” hosted by our Student Success Services Department. Families and students added leaves representing their hopes for themselves, their students, our school, or our community as a whole. We saw hopes ranging from getting good grades, having a good day, maintaining good attendance, winning a championship, and speaking and learning more Hopi Lavayi.

These goals are all attainable, and we are excited to watch our community work toward them throughout the school year. Thank you for partnering with us and helping make FMES a place where our students can grow, achieve, and dream big.

We wish continued success to our entire First Mesa Mighty Indian community. Thank you for being part of our FMES family!

Beginning of Year (BOY) testing will begin this week at FMES.

We highly encourage families to support healthy attendance and positive habits during this important time. Getting plenty of rest, eating healthy snacks and meals, arriving at school on time, limiting screen time and being present each day can help give your child the best opportunity to do their very best on these assessments.

These beginning-of-year benchmarks are important because they give us valuable insight into where your child is academically at the start of the year. This information helps teachers identify areas of strength and areas for growth, while also helping us set meaningful goals for each student to work toward throughout the school year.

Thank you for partnering with us to help our Mighty Indians start the year strong and reach their goals.
