You took your hand off its mouth. Then you got busy.

The noise came back. The podcast in the car. The scroll before bed. The calls you take so you don't have to hear yourself. You didn't muzzle it again. You didn't have to. An animal that isn't fed goes quiet on its own.

It eats silence. That's the whole diet. Ten minutes where nothing is asked of you. A walk with nothing in your ears. The drive with the radio off.

You've called that wasted time. You filled it every time.

Starving it is the second muzzle. Quieter than the first. Works better.

It's still in there. It won't beg.

Take your hand off its mouth and the first thing it does is smell.

Not think. Smell.

It goes nose-first into the pile you've been living in and it knows. That one's good. That one's rot. It doesn't weigh them. It doesn't ask what you paid.

You've had this all along. You knew which room you didn't want to walk into. You knew which name on the screen made your stomach drop. You knew which yes cost you something and you said it anyway.

You didn't need more information. You needed to stop arguing with what you already smelled.

Put your hand back and it stops. You'll turn the pile over the rest of your life.

The animal isn't going to spare you the answer.

You were taught she is closing its mouth.

A woman, a lion, her hands at its jaw. Taming it. Keeping the animal quiet. That's what strength looked like. The thing under control, the mouth held shut.

Look again. The hands are not clamped. They rest. Her weight is easy. The lion hasn't moved away from her.

The same gesture is a muzzle if you fear the animal and a caress if you trust it. Same hands. Same jaw.

This is what was in the trees.

You've had your hand over its mouth so long you forgot what was under it. Warm. Breathing. Still there.

It isn't trying to get away.

Take your hand off its mouth.

You've been running. You called it moving on.

Away from the woods. Away from the dark at the edge of the field, the place you've never once walked into. You kept to the open ground where you could see everything coming, and you called that safety.

You weren't running from a stranger. The thing in the dark is yours. It's the animal you muzzled. The knowing you sent away. It didn't die out there. It went where you wouldn't follow, and it has been waiting at the treeline the whole time, watching you keep to the light.

So the open ground was never safe. It was only empty.

What you sent away is in the trees. You have to go where it went.

You turn toward the dark. Everything in you says don't.

The running was the danger. Never the woods.

You go in.

You silenced it and called that strength.

The same tightening in the gut. The same pull toward the door. You called it too much, put it away, and the room went quiet. You called the quiet peace.

It was no one keeping watch.

The animal was the thing that knew what was coming. It stood up before you did.

Muzzle it long enough and you stop hearing it at all. So you walk in. You stay too long. You say yes while everything in you has already sat down and refused. Then you call it bad luck.

You put the watch to sleep yourself.

Prey is the animal that stopped listening to itself.

Your body knew first.

Before the thought caught up. Before you could talk yourself down. Something in you had already decided.

A tightening in the gut. A pull toward the door. The no that rose from the floor of you while your mouth was still saying yes.

You knew before you could say why.

That knowing is an animal. It lives lower than words. It doesn't wait for proof. You've felt it wake.

You called it too much. You called it dramatic. You told it to sit down.

It was right, and you muzzled it anyway.

"Grief Without a Funeral."
You've been waiting to be done. To feel normal again, to stop carrying it. And the longer that day refuses to come, the more you've decided the problem is you.
It isn't. Some grief was never built to end. You're not lagging behind it β€” you're in the middle of it, becoming someone you haven't met yet.
And you've been doing it with no one beside you. Nothing the world could see was lost, so no one knew to come. People used to be walked through this β€” by someone who'd already been through it. We forgot how to do that for each other. That's what's missing. Not something in you.
If you're in it, you don't have to carry it where no one can see. That's the door I keep open.

The heaviest grief is the kind no one can see you carrying. You've gotten so good at looking fine that even the people closest to you don't know you're still under it.

"You of all people."
You know how grief is supposed to go. You've walked other people through it β€” the softening, the turning, the lifting. Maybe it's your work β€” guiding other people through theirs.
And your own grief stays. Years in, and it hasn't lifted. So you passed a quiet sentence on yourself: the one who helps everyone, who couldn't do the one thing for yourself. You of all people.
It was never the failure you took it for. But you won't take that from me β€” you're the one who says it to everyone else.
