Today is Bengal Giving Day! We are incredibly grateful to the Sargent Family for offering a $5000 donation match for the Shirley Sargent Scholarship Endowment. Please help us reach that match!

Shirley Sargent embodied our department’s focus on students. She was the admin assistant in our department and the Idaho Museum of Natural History for over 30 years, and she used that time to build the culture that we still actively foster today. Shirley believed in the importance of education to change lives, and her children and grandchildren continue to be Bengals. The Shirley Sargent Scholarship helps multiple geosciences majors each year and can be the difference in finishing the degree. Please join us and the Sargent Family in expanding Shirley’s support of students.

Hey, all! It's Bengal Giving Day today and tomorrow, and we could use your help. We've been busting at the seams at LRFS for the last several years, which is a great problem to have. An anonymous donor has generously donated $20,000 as match funding to help us expand the resources available (a new bunkhouse so that no more canvas tents leak or collapse during summer blizzards, more bathrooms to decrease the general smell of BO, and expanded eating/working space -- because everyone deserves a chair!). Please help us by contributing something, even if it's small. You can watch a video with recent field camp grads and make a donation here:

The Lost River Field Station (LRFS), north of Mackay, is an ISU teaching and research facility that is home to the ISU Geology Field Camp. The facility is built on ten acres near Chilly Idaho, on the Big Lost River and directly in front of Borah Peak. It was built in 2002 and donated to the ISU Geos...

The WSGS has a new position for an entry level geologist!

We are looking for an inquisitive geologist who wants to apply their enthusiasm and skills to understanding Wyoming's geology, and who aspires to make a positive impact by studying Wyoming’s natural resources. As a Geologist I (ENGE 08) with the Wyoming State Geological Survey, you’ll dive into interesting geological investigations and special projects primarily focusing on economic geology. From identifying critical minerals to mapping aggregate resources, your work will directly contribute to the stewardship of Wyoming's vast geological treasures.

For more information about the Wyoming State Geological Survey, please visit https://main.wsgs.wyo.gov/about/employment.

The 2024 field camp is in the books! We had a phenomenal group this year and an unexpected commitment to yodeling. With views like this, though, it makes sense! Please share one of your field memories from school!

WE MADE IT TO THE FINAL 4!! Our logo is objectively better than our opponent’s (Pomona State), but they’re a lot bigger than us so they’ve got an edge in getting out of vote. Please support our GeoClub by going to https://www.instagram.com/geosociety?igsh=NzFsZzU2ZGR3NWl1 and voting for us!

The ISU GeoClub has made it to the top 8 in the national geology club logo competition, but we still need help with votes! If you have Instagram, please go to https://www.instagram.com/geosociety?igsh=NzFsZzU2ZGR3NWl1 click on their logo, and vote for us in their story poll by clicking on us in our head-to-head view! (Only works on mobile devices.) Our logo was designed by our students and, if it gets to the next round or higher the club will receive funding to support student activities. The ISU GeoClub funds and maintains a gear closet to improve access to the field, volunteers lots of time in local classrooms, sponsors pizza parties for students to meet visiting speakers, hosts field trips/movie nights/dance lessons/etc. Please vote for us!

We're up against Beloit College today in the Geology Club logo competition. If you have Instagram, please vote for us! The system is pretty clunky: go the the GSA Instagram page and click on their logo (the photo to the left of their name). It will open up a reel with a series of logos to vote between; you vote by clicking on the name of the school. It's a close race, so please take a minute to support the ISU GeoClub!

The winners receive additional funding from GSA. Our club, which won best student organization on campus for the 2022-2023 year, uses their funds for things like a gear closet to support field education access, outreach to schools, hosting the Rock ID-fest for community members, providing pizza for students and guest speakers after Colloquium, etc.

Y'all!!! The ISU GeoClub logo is in a bracket competition against other geology clubs for a chance to win funding from the Geological Society of America!! The voting is currently only on instagram, so please go there and vote for us! ISU Geosciences Alumni Group

Due to technical issues, please cast your votes for the 2024 Geology Club Tee-Off via GSA's Instagram stories. We're working to resolve the issue with voting directly in the Geology Club Tee-Off bracket as soon as possible.

Congratulations to Laticia Herkshan for winning the Benny Award for Outstanding Event of the Year 2023-2024!! Laticia, a member of the ISU Geosciences team for a few years, was a driving force for an amazing Indigenous People’s Day this year. Thank you for your incredible work!

Another achievement to celebrate in the department! A huge congratulations to Carrie Bottenberg, who was selected as one of the Outstanding Service Award recipients at ISU this year! She was commended for her outreach efforts on and off campus, ranging from hosting hands-on science activities for kindergartners through assisting grad students and faculty with various geotechnical problems. She is the first person to volunteer for department events and places a high priority on supporting our community (and ensuring tasty food!).

Carrie has succeeded in never posting a photo of herself on the department’s faculty page, so I’m using a gif of a tiger instead.

Congratulations, Carrie, and well deserved!!
