The su***de risk for individuals identifying as LGBTQIA+ or BIPOC is significantly higher than those identifying as cisgender or heterosexual and are disproportionately at a higher risk for psychological distress, particularly when they feel they are not welcome or accepted for who they are. Studies have shown that youth who identify as le***an, gay, or bisexual are 4x more likely to attempt su***de than their heterosexual peers and transgender adults are almost 12x more likely to attempt su***de than the general population. Having a source of support for fostering hope and recovery from distress significantly reduces su***de risk and promotes positive well-being. We chose to create origami cranes, which symbolize support and encouragement, in the pattern of the progress pride flag as one small act of support and acceptance of our clients within the LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities. It symbolizes that all of our clients are welcome in our clinic and deserving of care and support, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
