From administering in-home bedside care to managing the primary care needs for entire counties in rural medical clinics, Idaho State University School of Nursing graduates have provided essential healthcare to Idahoans for 70 years. Growing from a handful of graduates in 1956, ISU Nursing Programs now boast over 5000 alumni.

Our first cohort of DNAP students and their family and faculty came together Saturday evening to celebrate their entry into clinical residency with a white coat ceremony. This is a symbolic rite of passage that marks a student's transition from classroom and simulation coursework to advanced clinical rotations. It emphasizes patient-centered care, ethics, and professional responsibility in nurse anesthesiology.

Small Steps, Healthier Futures. Nursing is about helping others achieve optimal health through achievable goals. In celebration of ISU’s 125th Anniversary, Dr. Kristie Karroum recently completed President Wagner’s 125 Challenge—walking, hiking, and biking 125 miles around Idaho. A great reminder that meaningful journeys begin with small steps. In just a few weeks, our students will begin, or return to, taking their own steps on a journey toward their goals- becoming skilled, compassionate nurses and nurse practitioners who will make a difference in the lives of others. We look forward to sharing the journey!

Every summer, the AHEC of Idaho hosts a medical learning camp called Camp Scrubs for high school students interested in healthcare. At the nursing training stations, the ISU ABSN students taught the camp-goers—these AHEC high school students who represent the next generation of healthcare providers—skills such as NG tube placement, medication administration and injections, proper PPE use, and glucose monitoring. More than 55 students from across the state visited the skills stations, making it a fun and engaging day for everyone involved.

Dr. Anderson received the AANP State Award for Outstanding Contributions recently in Las Vegas. Dr. Arvidson, Idaho’s State Liaison, presented it. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP) empowers all nurse practitioners (NPs) to advance accessible, person-centered, equitable, high-quality health care for diverse communities through practice, education, advocacy, research and leadership (PEARL). The AANP State Award for Outstanding Contributions recognizes individuals who have demonstrated excellence that supports the NP role in the areas of PEARL.

Drs. Anderson and Crownhart are in Baltimore this week at CCNE training. They are both NP residency site reviewers. Dr. Crownhart is also an academic site reviewer.

“My husband, who’s a professor in business, and I have talked about this a lot,” says Sue Anderson, associate dean and director of the School of Nursing. “He said, ‘Your nursing students have the most responsibility of any student on campus. If my business students screw up, somebody may lose some money. If your nursing students don’t know what they’re doing, they can kill someone.’”
