Bootacular was a blast! We gave away 140 juiceboxes and lots of candy. The kids had fun learning about the food groups by throwing different foods into the cauldrons!

Fun fact: pumpkins are a fruit, not a vegetable! 🎃

Intuitive eating tip 2:
Embrace the mentality that there is no 'good' or 'bad' food, all food has a place in a healthy diet. Food is not the enemy, cookies and cake can be enjoyed just as much as broccoli and asparagus can.
Honor your hunger cues. Restricting food can lead to harmful cycles such as binge eating.
By following these two things you will be able to foster a healthy relationship with food, gain a better understanding of your body's needs, and begin to understand that 'diet culture' isn't healthy.

Intuitive eating tip 1:
Focus on what you're eating!! If you're constantly on your phone or watching a show while eating a meal you are detracting from your ability to connect with what you are doing and process the food you take into your body. This could lead to overeating, binging, or increased cravings. Ways you can increase your focus on what you're eating include: take in the textures and taste of the food, take time to chew your bites, or think about how you feel while you eat this food.

We live in an information saturated environment. There is so much information available anytime we want it and it’s coming from all types of sources, some good and others not so great. It can be overwhelming to attempt to absorb all the information thrown at you and evaluate it for accuracy and whether it applies to you. There exists plenty of resources with reliable information, sometimes it takes someone to show you!
Here are a few websites from trusted sources that have accurate information:
Nutrition.gov is maintained by the USDA and they have lots of articles on healthy eating. They regularly post articles on current topics such as carbohydrates and seasonal recipes.
Ever want to know what’s in your food? fdc.nal.usda.gov is the USDA’s food database where you can look up whatever food item you’re eating and get a breakdown of the nutrients in it.
Eatright.org is the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics website, they are an organization of nutritionist and dietitians. Their goal with the public is the help improve its nutritional status through nutrition education, their website has lots of great articles on healthy eating.

The next two posts are going to be on how to evaluate nutrition information and how to find reliable sources.
Maybe you’ve received advice from a friend or you’re looking at a webpage for a certain food product, how do you know if the information you’re getting is correct? There are a few ways to evaluate the information yourself and determine how to apply it in your life.
1. Is the information offering a quick fix or sound too good to be true? It probably is too good to be true, there are no quick fixes in nutrition and there is probably not ‘one product to cure everything’
2. Does the advice list certain foods as good or bad? It can be damaging to mental health to label foods as bad. Variety is healthy and all foods fit somewhere into a healthy diet!
3. Are you looking at the website for a food product? Often these products are going to marketed to sound much better than they are. It’s important to look for how they reached their claims, if they have any research to support them. Or if they have a third party to evaluate their claims
4. Sometimes YOU are the best evaluator of what is right for you! Eat what makes you happy and what makes you feel healthy.
5. If you have questions, you can always meet with a registered dietitian or doctor.

Carbs can get such a bad rep as the thing that makes people bloat or gain weight. But in reality, your body needs carbohydrates to function. Your brain runs on only glucose so all other nutrients in the body are converted to glucose before they are used. There are lots of different sources of healthy carbs including fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Trying new whole grains can be fun, there are so many different grains to try! From quinoa and buckwheat to bulgur, farro, and teff. Don’t be afraid branch out and try new foods, you never know what you might like.

The clubs most recent activity was participating in My Brothers Table at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Pocatello. My Brothers Table is funded by donations and grants and gives warm meals every Sunday to anyone who may be food insecure. We were able to participate in buying, preparing, and serving a warm lasagna meal last month.

The goal of this page is to share information about upcoming events for the ISU Nutrition and Wellness Club. We will share pictures from events to show how we are involved in giving back to our community and the fun activities we do as a club. This page will also have occasional posts about nutrition information to hopefully share some fun or applicable information. Overall the goal of this page is to be engaging and to help people outside the club understand the goals of the club - to engage anyone in learning about nutrition and wellness and being involved in the community!
