Congratulations to Save the Glover! Inc. and its 16-member board, recently honored with a Pioneer in Preservation Award from Essex National Heritage Area.

When we named the Gen. John Glover Farmhouse in Swampscott to our 2025 Most Endangered Historic Resources list last November, we knew visibility was only the first step. The people who show up, raise money, and keep asking hard questions are what turn a listing into a future. This community has kept the final home of Revolutionary War General John Glover in the conversation through demolition requests, demolition delays, and even a letter of support from filmmaker Ken Burns. The farmhouse is more than 250 years old, and the campaign continues.

Thank you to every volunteer, donor, and town official who has helped. This is what partners in preservation look like.

There's still time to join the conversation! This THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, PM presents the 2026 Historic Preservation Summit: How to Save a Place.

Speakers include Kam Oborne and Robert Labrie of the Williams-Boltwood Project, presenting on crafting a compelling preservation narrative, and Lindsay Allen of East Somerville Main Streets alongside Stuart Saginor of the Community Preservation Coalition, covering the tools, agencies, and regulatory landscape that make advocacy effective. The day is rounded out by sessions on identifying what gives a place real value and navigating the common roadblocks that derail preservation campaigns.

New this year in the Massachusetts Historic Preservation Matching Grant Program is a Climate Action grant category! Eligible projects include energy audit assessments, insulation upgrades, alternative energy sources (solar, geothermal, wind, etc.), upgraded/converted systems or appliances, and storm windows. Water mitigation projects (wet proofing crawl spaces, gutters, site work, etc.) may be considered, but preference will be given to decarbonization projects.

Applications to lift or relocate buildings will not be considered. Upgrades should be consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. Applicants are encouraged to leverage programs offered by utility providers. Projects in this category cannot include work in other grant-eligible categories.

PM is now accepting Letters of Inquiry for the 2027 grant cycle of this impactful program. For information about eligible projects and organizations, see https://buff.ly/3Da8pew

Greenfield Savings Bank recently celebrated the completion of a nearly $7 million restoration of the historic 1797 Leavitt-Hovey House, one of downtown's most recognizable landmarks. The bank purchased the building from the city for just $10,000 back in 2023, with plans to restore it for community and business use. During the restoration, historical research revealed that the house's original owner, Jonathan Leavitt, had also served as the first president of the Franklin Bank of Greenfield, meaning the building now once again supports banking in the city, nearly 230 years later! The team carefully restored the building's distinctive historic exterior while bringing it fully up to code. Congratulations on a successful restoration of this remarkable historic landmark!

Last weekend, Lenox Historical Commission marked 50 years since its formation by the town's Select Board with two days of talks and tours. Events included programming at the Lenox Historical Society's Museum of Lenox History at the Academy, a session at the Lenox Library, "In the Footsteps of Edith," a reflective walking tour through the grounds of Edith Wharton's estate at The Mount, and a closing celebration at the Community Center.

For half a century, this volunteer commission has identified and surveyed the town's historic assets, advised other town boards, and educated residents about Lenox's heritage. That's half a century of steady, often unglamorous civic work, exactly the kind that keeps a town's history intact. Congratulations to the Lenox Historical Commission and everyone who's served on it!

Medway's Jacob Ide House, built around 1814–1815, reopened to the public this past weekend as the permanent home of the Medway Historical Museum. Jacob Ide was a theologian and outspoken abolitionist who prepared more than 40 men for the ministry and lived in the house with his wife, Mary Emmons Ide, for decades. The Town of Medway purchased the property in 2018 using funds, and Town Meeting later approved $1.25 million in CPA funding for the structural repairs and accessibility upgrades, including a new wheelchair ramp and accessible parking, that made this reopening possible. A great example of what dedicated local funding and years of patience can accomplish.

A fresh update out of Springfield: Springfield Preservation Trust just added two more properties to its Most Endangered Historic Resources List in a rare mid-year update, the Joshua Bliss Vinton home and a post-Civil War Italianate mansion at 28 Underwood Street. The Springfield Historical Commission had suggested creating a historic district around the site, but the property currently has no legal protection. The current owner says the project can't move forward without demolishing the structure to build apartments, and the Massachusetts Historical Commission has allowed the plan to proceed. A reminder that without a Local Historic District or similar protection in place, "historic" and "protected" aren't the same thing.

A successful grant story from Springfield's Forest Park neighborhood: in 2025, Springfield Performing Arts Ventures received a Massachusetts Historic Preservation Matching Grant for the restoration of two exterior doors at the former Faith Congregational Church. Built in the 1890s in the New Gothic Revival style, the church closed after its final service in 2021 following years of declining membership. Rather than let it sit vacant, the nonprofit purchased the building and transformed the sanctuary into 52 Sumner, a performance venue now hosting live music, theater, and arts education for the community, while carefully maintaining the building's historic exterior.

Letters of Inquiry are now open for the 2027 grant cycle of this same program. $135,000 is available in 1:1 matching grants up to $10,000 for exterior work on nonprofit-owned historic properties.

Letters of Inquiry are due by 5:00pm on November 2.

10 days until How to Save a Place! Join Preservation Massachusetts on Thursday, October 15th at the Connors Center in Dover for our 2026 Historic Preservation Summit. The day is built around one goal: sending you home with a real toolkit for advocacy in your own community, not just theory.

You'll hear from Kam Oborne and Robert Labrie of the Williams-Boltwood Project on crafting a message that actually moves people, Lindsay Allen of East Somerville Main Streets and Stuart Saginor of the Community Preservation Coalition on the tools, agencies, and regulations that back up effective advocacy, plus PM's Jessica Rudden-Dube kicks off the day with a discussion on understanding what gives a place value. The day rounds out with a group discussion on navigating the roadblocks that can derail even the strongest campaigns.

Tickets are $150 (breakfast, lunch, coffee, and snacks included), with limited scholarships available. Join us for the conversation!
