Wayzata Greenwood Elementary School

Wayzata Greenwood Elementary School Excellence. For each and every student. The staff members emphasize basic skills while educating the child’s emotional, social and intellectual self.

Greenwood Elementary School was built in 1965 and is located near the intersection of Medina Road and County Road 101 in Plymouth. Staff members at Greenwood Elementary have created an environment where students are encouraged to develop to their full potential. Children’s developmental level is the focus in classrooms and staff members motivate students to learn at a pace commensurate with their

abilities in all areas. Competence is developed in problem solving skills among students and innovative ideas are generated while failures are accepted and self-confidence is promoted. The elementary school experience provides a foundation for learning for all students. From the beginning of kindergarten, students learn the wide variety of skills necessary for success in school and out of school. There is a focus on foundational skills in reading, math, science, and social studies. We recognize the importance of the arts, fitness and health, Spanish and technology on our students' ability to think creatively, globally, and in a healthy manner. The integration of technology assists in the personalization of education, creating more interactive lessons, and building skills that are becoming increasingly important for success in today’s work force, such as digital literacy, communication and collaboration. Our staff works with all students to help them excel. To accomplish this, they use ongoing formative assessments and work in Professional Learning Teams to analyze student data to address individual needs. The mission of Greenwood Elementary School is to prepare all students for the future by providing a challenging education that builds academic competence, develops responsible citizenship, encourages creativity, promotes lifelong learning, advances critical thinking skills, instills a commitment to personal wellness and fosters respect for self and others. Greenwood Elementary was recognized as a 2010 Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The Blue Ribbon Schools program honors schools whose students, regardless of background, achieve in the top 10 percent of their state on state tests. All Wayzata Public Schools elementary schools have a volunteer parent organization that works closely with the school to provide many wonderful experiences for the students. Parents also provide enrichment experiences through the Partners in Literature and Partners in art programs. Homebase, a school-age child care program is available for parents from 6:30 a.m. and until 6 p.m. throughout the district. Each school also has several teacher-led club experiences that are available for students after school.

Grizzly Dash: The Final Lap

Our incredible PTA is committed to trying to keep many of the meaningful programs students and families love in place during these challenging times. They’ve already made adjustments to help account for evolving budget numbers, but we’d love your help to finish the Fun Run (a.k.a. Grizzly Dash) in a successful manner. Please stay tuned for school communications about “Grizzly Dash: The Final Lap.” An e-blast will be sent the morning of December 1st to families.

Thanks again for all you do,
Dr. G

Thank You Veterans

Our staff, students, and school continues to hold our Veterans and their families close in our hearts. We are grateful and we hope this video provides a small glimpse of the appreciation we have for Veterans all year long. Thanks to the many students, staff, and parents who helped make this project possible...including a very talented former student (who you’ll hear singing in the video).

Grizzly Dash Update

Way to go, !! This week we announced another prize-level after crossing the $10,000 milestone! As part of the fun, students earned one additional teacher to slime and I got to wear some colorful hair dye. Since many of our kiddos are learning from home (or alternating in-school sessions within the Hybrid model), we wanted to be sure to include them in the fun.

Be on the lookout for a colorful video message for students in today’s Parent Newsletter (a.k.a. Thursday eNews).

This year’s Teacher Appreciation Week is like none other. But even with the uncertainties connected to COVID-19, there is one thing we are certain about. We value our partnership with you and appreciate ALL teachers!

With heartfelt thanks,

From the Desk of Dr. G (Video)

The video below started out as a very authentic “Thank You” to families for their support with getting Distance Learning started, but got a little off-track when somebody discovered the “My Talking Pet” app. 🙂

Our team wants to extend a very sincere thank you to families. We appreciate you and we’re here for you. Please reach out if there’s anything we can do to support you or your child.

Calling all ...Here’s a “Top 10” list just for you with a surprise guest host (or two). We’re excited for Monday and our team stands ready to serve (and learn) with you all.

PS: Is it bad when the outtakes footage exceeds the usable video footage?! :)

Thank you for your time, work, and partnership to help us navigate these unprecedented times together. We wanted to check in with families for two important reasons:

1.) To let your child(ren) know we are thinking of them (see special video for students).

2) To update families on some tentative plans for the weeks ahead.

We will get through this together.

In partnership,

Brad Gustafson, Principal

This one is for the kids! We’re thinking of you. We're going to stay connected. And we're here to help.

iPad and Supply Pick Up

UPDATED March 17th at 8:30a.m.: All K-5 families are asked to send one healthy adult to school to pick up important learning supplies and iPads today - Tuesday, March 17 from 12:00p.m.-6:15 p.m.

Please bring a backpack or something to carry your items. Once again, the supplies being picked up are above and beyond iPads, so it is really important that we get them to you today.

In order to streamline things, we’re using a “grab and go” approach, so the pick-up time will not be an opportunity to check in with your child's teacher. (For families with multiple children, our team will try to have everything ready in your oldest child’s classroom.) Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Lastly, we will have some new and “gently used” books placed on tables in the hallway. Please grab a few books for your child to read (and keep) while they’re away from school. I’ll plan to share more info in the coming days.

In partnership,
Dr. G
