About a year ago, I read a study in which couples in marriage counseling were asked about their greatest relational fears.

At the top of the list for women was being killed by their husband, or abandoned by him. (Not that they necessarily believed either of those things would really happen, just that those were their greatest fears.)

At the top of the list for men was being criticized or embarrassed.

For some couples, this forced vacation will be a much needed time to reconnect. For others, it will be too much, too fast, for too long.
If you need space, take it responsibly. Responsible distance taking includes the promise of return. "Hey honey, I'm feeling kind of overwhelmed. I'm going to go take a drive and I'll be back in an hour."
Sometimes pulling the circuit breaker and taking a short time out for instance from escalating into a full-on fight or battle that will do lasting damage.

We all have pre-wired fight or flight responses that are created during childhood. When we get that punch in the gut sensation, we tend to do the same thing we've always done. If we were feeling ignored as a child and threw a tantrum and then someone paid attention to us, we will tend to do the same thing in our adult life, but it usually has the opposite affect. Similarly, We might instead shut down when we get triggered.

Whether it is rage or tears or passive aggression or withdrawal, none of these strategies are effective as adults. That punch in the gut feeling. We are not actually being attacked, like by a bear in the forest. Nor are we actually being abandoned, left alone to freeze and die alone.

When we realize that, often the possibility returns to talk ourselves past the visceral feeling and become an adult again. Then, with adult skills of intelligence and compassion, maybe we can chart a healthy path.
