GEO Club meets regularly to sponsor activities supporting PSU students interested in geography This year we're going to Tampa!

The Geography and Environmental Planning club is an academic club open to all students interested in learning about Geography and its related discipline. Some of the activities include Outings (local field trips, trail work, hiking), volunteer work, guest speakers, Geography Awareness Week, GIS DAY, and the annual AAG National Conference.

ATMOSPHERIC CURIOSITY:
Anyone know the name for what we’re seeing here? These were taken about 50 minutes apart (top one is later). I have already confirmed my hypothesis with PSU Meteorologist extraordinaire, Dr. Eric Hoffman.

Ok Geo Geeks, which National Park is this?

I had someone ask me if they speak English in New Zealand. My answer was yes. But now it’s changed to “well, sort of…”

Any guesses to what you can expect when you see this sign?

Ok, geo-geeks, another movie challenge. What is the fictional name of this volcano in a very well known movie series? It may help to picture it much angrier…

Ok, Geo movie geeks - what movie is this site famous for? And where would you find it in reality?

We had a wonderful celebration of Bryon on Saturday. Thanks to all of those who were able to attend and for all of those who were there in spirit. We had alumni spanning most years from 2001-15 so I’m confident Bryon was smiling down on that. I’m sharing a group photo here as well as a few new ones that you might appreciate.

Lots of great memories shared and I only wish I’d been able to be in on all the conversations. Maybe we’ll have another alumni event down the road. Homecoming 2026, anyone?

Reminder: for those able to attend, the Celebration of the Life of Bryon Middlekauff is tomorrow, 1-4pm at the Squam Lakes Association community room. (534 US 3, Holderness NH)

Please come if able, to share stories and reconnect with the community that Bryon was such an important part of.

Please carpool, if at all possible.

Your USGS hard at work!

Came across this research vessel in harbor and chatted with a crew member. They do nighttime research of fish populations on Lake Superior by dragging a mid-level net with sensors that pick up sound signals from fish bladders. They can estimate species type based on different sonic profiles. Crazy. Didn’t think to ask why research is done at night, but I, guessing it’s a better time to minimize conflicting sounds, like engine noises.

It’s an impressive boat. Would definitely want to be on something like this if it were stormy.

WHERE IN THE WORLD?

Ok, Geographers, we’re going to keep this going in honor of Dr. Middlekauff.

Where am I, while visiting GEO Club past-president Adam Kurowski (‘02)? (Note: Adam’s friends in the know should not guess…)

Name the city, the feature, and the two bodies of water involved:

PSU lost a legend earlier this month. Many former students likely had Bryon for at least the core Physical Geography course, but I expect that many also had him for other upper-level courses. He loved field courses in particular , both local (White Mountains / Acadia), national (Four Corners) and international (Paris, Tanzania).

He was one of the founders of the GEO Club as it currently exists, including the World Geo Bowl team, fall trips to NESTVAL conferences and the AAG conference each spring. It’s a credit to him that the club became one of the most well known and consistent on campus.

Please give a shout out here if you participated in one or more of those and share any additional photos you might have!

Bryon loved staying in touch with alumni, hearing of your continued adventures.

There will be a Celebration of Life event at the Squam Lakes Association community room on Saturday, Oct. 18, 1-4,
