Play is more than just funโ€”it helps children learn, grow, problem-solve, and connect with others! Read more about the Importance of Play in this monthโ€™s article by our Mental Health Consultant, Lynn Lucas, LCSW, RPT-S.

Children are not mini adults or a โ€œmini-me versionโ€ of their parents. Problem solving and learning how to be a good friend are a couple of skills best learned through the experience of play. In fact, playing is essential for healthy development and making powerful connections in oneโ€™s brain.
If you recall a time when you were fully engaged in a playful activity, you may notice that it allows you to be fully in the moment. Play is stress reducing, and provides benefits such as relaxation, reduced pain, positive feelings and connection. Stress and anger are diffused.
When children play, they are practicing regulating emotions, and learning how to think, feel and respond to the environment around them. Playing involves the whole body. Our brains gather and process information through input from all our senses, so thinking and making sense of information does not just occur in our brains, but by how we move and interact with the world around us. Experience is really the best teacher.
Children can rehearse or practice taking different roles and meet needs for belonging, power, problem solving and experimentation. Think about the difference between being told how to do something and learning through your own experiences. If it is a playful or fun experience, or (even sometimes difficult) it is more likely to take hold. Playing with a grown-up who you love, allows you to make some mistakes, and who keeps you safe, creates core memories, and lessons learned will last a lifetime and contribute to helping your child be the best version of themselves. PLaY On!

Money can be a tough topic, so let's talk about it.
We know that everything seems to cost more these days, and for many families, it can be hard to make ends meet. At Head Start, we believe every child deserves a great education, no matter a family's financial situation. That's why our program is completely FREE for eligible families.
When we say free, we mean it.
There are no application fees, no registration fees, and no hidden costs. We provide all school supplies, so you won't have to shop for classroom lists before the school year begins.
Getting started is easy, too. You don't have to take time off work or spend money on gas to come to us. We can meet with you in your home or complete your enrollment over the phone.
Throughout the school year, you won't be asked to pay for supplies, classroom materials, or snacks. We provide nutritious breakfasts, lunches, and snacks every school day because children learn best when they have healthy meals.
If your child is still potty training, that's okay! We'll partner with you to support their progress, and we'll provide diapers or pull-ups during the school day while they're learning.
Most importantly, "free" never means "less." Our classrooms are led by qualified, certified teachers who are passionate about helping children learn and grow. We use a high-quality curriculum designed to prepare children for kindergarten and beyond.
At Head Start, we're committed to removing barriers so your family can focus on what matters mostโ€”helping your child thrive.

Head Start programs serve roughly 25,000 to 27,000 children in foster care nationwide each year. Because the federal program tracks data by individual participating children rather than distinct foster family units, the exact total count of unique foster families is not explicitly tallied, though foster children are categorically eligible for enrollment. Children in foster care qualify for Head Start regardless of household income. The program guarantees continuous placement to help children maintain education during home transitions.
