Neuropsychological evaluations for children. Making a clinical process a meaningful experience.

582. Unmasking the Twice-Exceptional Learner w/ Dr. Megan Helmen 06/23/2026

I listed to episode #12 in 2017 to learn more about the gifted population and now I’m the guest 🤯

I listened to dozens of episodes on how to open and run a clinical practice in 2020-2022 as I planned and opened the doors of Developmental Discoveries Neuropsychology.

4 episodes ago, Tony Attwood was the guest. I used his strategies when I first explained to a teen about their autism in 2007.

…and I’m the guest on episode #582 this week, talking about assessment of gifted and twice exceptional children. I LOVE this topic and it is deeply meaningful to me to share about it with others. If you’re doing child assessments, please consider listening 🎉

Thank you, Dr. Jeremy Sharp ☀️

💛 How could your life have been impacted if someone helped you understand your disability from early on?

Research interviewing adults with disabilities like autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities is very compelling: Knowing about and understanding your disability helps create positive identity, allows connection to community, and is a buffer against mental health symptoms.

Out kid feedback sessions are research-supported, sometimes zany, sometimes deeply moving, and always honor whatever reaction a child has in the moment.

✨You would be AMAZED at kids’ reactions.

❤️Creating a practice that integrates this step is and always will be one of the best things I’ve ever done.

Thanks to Dr. Liz of Dr. Liz Angoff for creating books and tools that support this process!

No child is untestable. The question is, what conditions create a situation where they are able to demonstrate their capabilities?

What have your experiences with evaluations been like?

Welcome, Anna! 🎉 We are so glad to have you on the Developmental Discoveries team! If you call to ask questions or schedule, you’ll likely have the pleasure of chatting with Anna 😄

We bid a sad farewell to Meg, who we knew at the time of hire, that her graduate school plans would take her onward and upward eventually. If you had the pleasure of talking to Meg in the past couple years, you know how wonderful she is!

🚌What’s an IEP?! It’s what we sometimes call ‘special education.’ It can take many forms (I could over explain SO MUCH MORE!) but this is the basic idea 😄

I’m not concise. I don’t want to edit video. So going forth, I present a series of videos that explain a developmental topic from my work, with potentially excessive repetition and detail! 🎉

As an aspiring imperfectionist whose company values include authenticity and scholarship, I present an unedited me in an effort to share helpful, reputable information 😅😊 Take what serves you and leave the rest ❤️

I’m a pediatric neuropsychologist specializing in developmental disabilities and differences (e.g., autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, giftedness, 2e, and more). I’ve provided evaluations for toddlers to teens since 2011. Welcome!
