The Troublemaker: Zetta Elliott and the Future of Children’s Literature If it was up to her, author and activist Zetta Elliott would lose the second title; she would instead prefer the word 'Artivist'.

Death to the Behavior Chart! 3 Reasons to Resist the Lure of Punishments and Rewards 09/07/2017

WELCOME Back to a new year. We get a chance to do it all over again. What will we try that is different? What about the big "D" word-- Discipline?
Below is a link with a few tips for elementary classrooms that could be useful for upper grades. I also ask that you think about how much time is spent on discipline in the classroom and within your school? How much of that time could be used for students exploring their interests?

What are YOU doing or NOT doing which creates an environment where learning cannot take place without-- constantly raising your voice and/or isolating students from the community? Reminder the school house is a mini-society.

School-wide conversations about behavior, in general, will assist, in bringing about an inspiring learning community. However, a positive behavior environment requires and starts with the school-wide behavior of the adults. Consider a whole school read and discussion of, Positive Behavior Facilitation, by Edna Olive. https://www.researchpress.com/books/1230/positive-behavior-facilitation-pbf

"This new edition of Positive Behavior Facilitation helps adults examine how they interact with youth, understand children’s behavior, and use effective interventions to facilitate permanent behavior change."

Continue to enjoy getting to know your students. Each student is a family, and each family belongs to a community.

Pat Poole Parrilla

Death to the Behavior Chart! 3 Reasons to Resist the Lure of Punishments and Rewards Star charts and color cards create a negative classroom environment, writes Justin Minkel. To address the root problems of students’ misbehavior, teachers need to toss the behavioral systems and focus on building relationships.
